Billie's POV
I was folding laundry when my phone buzzed.
The caller ID said Agency.
My heart stuttered.
I hesitated before answering. What if it was bad news? What if all this wasn't going to happen?
"Hi, Billie? This is Nina," the voice said, warm but professional.
"Hi," I said, trying to keep my voice steady.
"We've reviewed your application and the preliminary reports," she continued. "
And while there are some concerns mostly about your schedule and privacy the agency is willing to move forward with a trial guardianship."
Trial guardianship.
The words echoed in my head.
It wasn't adoption yet. Not permanent. But it was a start.
"Does this mean...?" I asked, barely daring to believe it.
"It means you'll have more responsibility and more access to the girls," Nina said. "But it also means more oversight home visits, counseling sessions, check-ins."
I swallowed hard. "I'm ready."
"You should be proud, Billie," Nina said. "Not everyone gets this far."
I closed my eyes, letting the news settle. Hope and fear tangled inside me.
This was only the beginning.
But it was real.
And I wasn't backing down.
