Billie's POV
Trying to explain "trial guardianship" to two three-year-olds was like trying to teach a cat to fetch.
They listened, sort of.
Mostly, they just wanted to know if it meant more ice cream.
I sat them down on the couch, the soft afternoon light spilling over their tangled curls.
"Okay, guys," I said, "I have some news."
Skylar's eyes got wide. "Is it good news?"
"Yeah," I smiled, trying to keep it simple. "You get to stay with me for a little longer. But some new people are going to visit sometimes, just to make sure we're all okay."
Mackenzie clapped her hands. "Like a party?"
"Kind of," I laughed. "But no balloons."
Skylar scrunched her nose. "No balloons? That's boring."
I shrugged. "Well, it's important."
Mackenzie tilted her head. "Will they bring snacks?"
"I'll make sure of it," I promised.
They giggled, leaning against me like this was just another day in a house full of mess and love.
And honestly?
That's all I needed.
