Farewell my friend you're leaving
It's time for you to go
Your friendship was a blessing
And I will miss you so
We shared so many secrets
You brightened up my days
You brought me so much happiness
With your kind and loving ways
You lifted up my spirits
When I was feeling blue
No matter what was happening
You knew just what to do
We ran between the raindrops
And walked beneath the sun
Ran barefoot in the summertime
And oh, we had such fun
Through all the ups and downs of life
The good times and the sad
From high school days to Golden years
The best friend I ever had
God is here to take you home
Now you and I must part
I love you and forever
You will live within my heart.
-Judy MarriottI scribbled it in my diary in hopes of writing a novel on our friendship and this would be exactly how I would begin. As I sat by the window and watched the rising sun, it was a feeling of welcome after the nights terrifying rain, the sun brought with it the rays of hope, love and friendship and it was the same feeling I had years ago when my parents died. All alone I sat by the window hoping for them to pass by and the only hand on my shoulder was Ellie by my side.
I heard the bathroom door ever so slightly creak and I knew Mariah was awake and she was silently using the washroom so she wouldn’t wake me up. But sleep had come too late and went away like a shooting star. I ignored the sounds and movement and went back to staring outside the window and drifting slowly into the brightest memory I could find.
Ellie peeped through the window of dorm 2 for a few seconds before she turned to face Mariah and I “coast is clear” she said with the adrenaline pumping through her making her fidgety yet calm “we just have to make a run for it and we will be there before we even know it”
I took a deep breath and said “ready?”
“Whenever you guys are” spat Mariah with her high pitched voice.
We walked slowly outside the dorm towards the main entrance trying to act normal in a very abnormal way “okay girls listen up” Ellie says “the security guard walks only in one direction back and forth and there will be a point where he vanishes out of sight for exactly ten seconds and that is when we strike”
“What about that evil little nun in the corner?” Mariah asks with nervousness in her voice.
“Oh! She is usually busy flirting with father Stanley” I say with a snort.
Ellie and Mariah burst into fits of laughter causing a bunch of gossip girls to turn around and glare. This hushes them down because the last thing we wanted now was attention. We slowly pause in front of the tennis court waiting for the guard to vanish and the minute he turns to the corner Ellie whispers “on my count of three, one……never mind RUN!!” and the three of us shoot towards the swimming pool compound, we run past the court and straight over the compound wall with ease and land on our feet with Mariah falling to her knees. With heavy breaths we straighten up and smile at each other and scan the large, cold and dark pool with a widening smile “okay we have forty minutes to ourselves, let’s do this shit!” I say.
“Okay on the count of-“
Before Ellie could finish “enough with the stupid counting Ellivia” Mariah screams. We laugh together and run towards the pool in full speed and dodge ourselves in. The chilly water sends Goosebumps all the way from my head to toe and I feel the weeks tension draining out. We swim together for ages loosing track of time and the chilly water tugging at our night gowns making it heavy. We talk about our future and all the beautiful things in life when suddenly Mariah says “SHHHH!! Guys I hear something”. We quiet down and come closer to each other when we hear the swimming pool door creak open.
