Mae Wilde above
Ava's P.O.V.
As I hum along to one of my many songs I hear my phone buzz. I look down to see who it is. My car suddenly swerves and I jerk it back into my lane making Mae jump up in shock. I can hear her heavy breathing and in the corner of my eye I can see her body shaking. I pull the car to the shoulder and park my truck. I look over to her body trembling and her hands covering her face. I immediately knew what had just flashed through her mind. I reach over to her and pull away her hands to reveal her tear stained cheeks."Mae breath it is going to be okay" I say.
She doesn't say a word, she just shakes her head. All I can do is hug her and try to replace the bad memories with the good.
Mae P.O.V.
As Ava is trying to calm me down, the crash just keeps replaying in my head over and over again. Until she starts to tell stories from when we were younger. Michaels image started to blur and be replaced with Ave's and mine when we were kids. "Come on Mae you are taking forever" Ava yells back at me. I try to catch up to her but she was to far away. She looks back at me and yells "The last one inside is a rotten egg". But then suddenly instead of running inside the door she hits the glass door and falls straight on her back. I approached her motionless body I reach down and see she is crying, but then a loud laughter escapes. All I could do was laugh along at how I saw her body hit the door and fall like dead weight.' Both Anne and I are laughing at the story she had just told and soon enough we were back on the road. We soon stopped at a gas station to pick up some food. I walk in with Ava in front of me, and we go through isles of junk food and by the time we are in line our arms are full. I put the items down and run to go get a drink, when I reach the cooler I she a tall dark haired boy in front of the cokes. I wait patiently, but it was to much so I reach over and tap him on the shoulder."Liam I told you I would get the food go wait in the car" the man says.He turns around with shock clear on his face.
"I'm so sorry I thought you were my friend Liam" he says.
"It's fine" I mumble and reach past him to pick up my drink and turn and walk away.
I soon reach the register to see Ava tapping her foot impatiently. I laugh and say "sorry" to the cashier and people behind Ava in line. We get back in the car and I start eat while she fills up the tank. I look around the gas station parking lot, then I spot the man from inside. He is tall with dark hair, it is shaved on both sides and leaves some sort of fohawk. He's got tan skin and a sleeve tattoo, he is very handsome. As Ava gets in the car and starts to pull off, I see him glance over and we make eye contact.
As we are driving down the highway I start to think of the accident and wonder if I could have stopped it from happening. I can't keep living like this though. It haunts me. I loose my train of thought when Ava turns up the radio with a song we love. As 'riptide' plays we begin to sing along. I roll down my window and watch as the trees fly past us. I smell the evergreen trees and know we are getting close to the camping grounds.
Before I know it we are at the campground, we get out of Ava's truck and I head to the bathroom. When I get out I see Ava unpacking the truck and struggling with the chairs, I can't help but laugh at how ridiculous she looks. I walk over and take one of the chairs as she was about to fall over. We empty all of our things and start to set up the tent.
"Mae I will set up the tent, you can make the fire and start dinner" Ava says.
"Are you sure, because the last time you did it by yourself it took all night"
"No I got it don't worry" she says trying to reason with me.
"Fine, but at least use the instructions"
"Believe me it's all up here" she says while tapping on her forehead.
I sigh and begin to make the fire, as the fire ignites I can hear Ava groaning impatiently. I look over to see her trying to shove a pole through the fabric. I laugh and begin to gather the materials for dinner.
"Dinner is ready" I yell.
"Dammit" Ava whispers.
I walk over to where she is trying to put together the tent and see her cheer as she connects two poles. Many minutes later and me trying very hard not to interject she is finished.
"I'm done" she yells.
"Come eat your dinner it is freezing now"
She rolls her eyes and picks up the extra hotdog on my plate. She plops down next to me and swallows her hotdog whole and chugs her coke. I can't help but laugh at how funny it is to see her eat like a barbarian.
"Let's sing songs" she says jokingly. I can't help but laugh at imagining me singing campfire songs. Before I knew it she had pulled out her guitar and was singing, all I could do was laugh at how ridiculous this was. Once she finished she applauded herself and says "Thank you I will be here all week." She gets up and walks away to go to the tent. My mind starts to wander to the boy at the gas station, he was one handsome man. He's not really my type though. I wonder where he goes to college and who Liam was, and if he is also attractive. My wandering mind stops when I hear Ava yell. I jump up and go inside the tent to see her jumping up and down like a scared child.
"There is a spider on my pillow, on my fucking pillow" she yells.
I walk over to her pillow to see a spider so small it is almost invisible. I reach down and pick it up and throw it out the opening in the tent. "Oh my god thank you, I thought I was going to die" she says sarcastically even though we both know it is true.
I go to the outhouse to use the bathroom to be meeted by more spiders. After getting my sleeping bag from the car I quickly make my bed and fall asleep listening to the birds singing.
