The Whispering Woods

I've been alone in these woods since I was a kid. My great-grandmother's kingdom was destroyed and forgotten long ago. We were the kingdom of animals. We were far away from all of the others and many people disregarded us in total. My ancestors had the power of controlling the wills of animals. Even the largest and deadliest creature would submit to the power of the people of Vita. Vita meant life, seeing as they could control all life forces, other than humans, of course.

I've always wished that I could have been like them; that I could restart my kingdom. But I can't. I'm a dud. I have no power over animals, I can't understand what they say, and I can't feel when they're in danger. The ladder things were just some of the many things my ancestors could do.

After Mara took away the stars, my kingdom was destroyed. We held so much power that something overtook us, and all of us were wiped out. That is, of course, apart from my mother. She was a baby at the time of the destruction, and eventually had me. But when the Horde discovered that she was a descendant of Vita, they... Took care of her.

I was left alone as a newborn baby in a hollowed tree in the whispering woods. The beasts of the woods never tried to hurt me, I suppose they could sense me. Shortly after my mother's murder, an old woman from the woods cared for me until I was 13. However, she met the same fate as my mom.

So now I live alone in a large hollowed-out tree in the woods. My home is made out of a beautiful, wide, blue tree. The leaves glow at night and small glimmers of light cascade down constantly, making for a beautiful sight. I sew my own clothing from the fibers from nearby plants, and I make my own food by the same means. I've raised myself to be self-sufficient.

Almost everybody on Etheria has forgotten about Vita. It's told about in scary stories to children to warn them not to mess with animals. Now, everyone apart from the highest ranks at the Horde assumes it's fictional.

To keep everyone believing this, the Horde will... Eliminate anybody who knows of Vita or could appear to be a descendant. That's why I've never left the woods. Nobody comes this deep into the forest, so nobody could ever find me. At least that's what I thought.

It all started on a normal day...

I woke up at the first roar of a beast somewhere out in the surroundings. I slumped out of the corner of the tree where the cushions in which I slept laid. I pushed my hair back and covered my head with a cream-coloured fabric that I used as a bonnet. It kept my head cool and made it harder to tell that I was a Vita descendant, as there were large feline ears protruding from my head rather than humanoid ones. If that wasn't obvious enough, the tail really sold me out. I adorned myself with a long bluebell sundress to cover it and keep me protected from the sun.

When I looked at myself in the water glistening outside of my shelter, I just looked like a regular citizen of Etheria. That is, if you don't count the irregularly sharp nails and teeth. However, those were easy to conceal.

Animalus people were the first to exist in Vita. They were just like regular people, however had animalistic traits. From what I was told by the woman who raised me, my mother was a beautiful cat animalus like me. From the legends I've heard, there were many of us. Now, it's just me.

I was scavenging for berries near my home when I heard a loud rumbling sound. Shortly after, I heard a vicious rustling of leaves and a shrill scream.

A scream.

I had never heard the sound of another person's voice since the day the Horde took my caregiver. My heart was racing out of my chest as I ran back into my home, dropping my basket and scattering my berries.
