We were all sad after Victoria's gruesome death. I think it was because she was just starting to redeem herself and show us a different side of herself, but now she was... gone. Lace actually took it really hard, but we did assure her she made her peace with her. Cleo and Greta were upset, having seen a different side to Victoria than any of us. I think Jack actually took it the hardest, knowing his Dad had died saving the doomed girl.
It was really dark now, it must have been late at night. I don't know where Jonah was taking us. We didn't have the map outlining how to get to Ryder's Aunt's house, so I assume that we were just getting the hell out of town and going from there. The truck was pitch black because we had no source of light considering our phones were dead. I think West had lost the car charger we were using a while ago. We didnt have a floor of mattresses anymore, so it was really hard and the whole truck would jolt when we hit a pot hole. I think I was next to Lace and Ryder, because I know they both snore. And they are snoring a lot. But I know I was next to Chris, because he was slumped on my shoulder occasionally whispering something completely nonsensical in my ear.
"What did the Fox say?" Was the first thing he said, and before I could answer him with a nonsense phrase like in the song he was back to sleep.
"The Backstreet Boys and N*SYNC were the same band. It was a stunt, Sadie," Was the next one.
"Were there even the same number of members in each group?" I said, managing to chuckle.
"Sssh!" He said before drifting back to sleep.
After a very strange ten minutes of Chris waking up and saying shit, he stopped for a good hour and I too started to drift off to sleep in the uncomfortable space. It was cold and dark but I managed to find comfort. But it was only a matter of minutes until he jumped up again and scared the hell out of me. Except he didn't say anything strange or silly, he looked completely freaked out. I could only make out his erratic breathing and wide eyes. He must have had a nightmare.
"Chris? Chris are you ok?"
His eyes dart to mine, and the dread fades away. He takes a deep breath and slumps back hard on the wall of the amp truck. I didn't think to ask what he dreamt about, because he started talking again before I could process any words.
"What if the apocalypse never happened?" He blurted. I imagine his nightmare must have been something horrible happening to the group, or himself.
"Life would be a lot easier, I can tell you that much," I force a laugh. Chris settles and chuckles.
"I would still be worrying about soccer each weekend," he fiddles with his fingernails, chewed down completely.
"I'd still be complaining about my English teacher," Chris laughs. I can't recall if he was in my class or not, but my English teacher had a reputation for being excruciatingly hard to understand.
"Do you think we would be friends? Like if we hadn't met during the apocalypse?"
I shrug. "Maybe... Well, Ryder and I were kinda friends before, but yeah we could have been friends if this didn't happen,"
He shifts in his position, and he takes off his backpack. "Truthfully," he begins. "I don't know if we would have been friends or not,"
I rub my nose. "Like because you hung out with Harry's group?"
"Well yeah, I mean his group was like the alpha to your omega, no offense," he said quietly, like he felt it might offend me.
"None taken. You're probably right, I mean I barely new a thing about you before the apocalypse,"
He chuckles lightly. "And now you know what a great kisser I am,"
I roll my eyes. "Whatever, lover boy,"
