The next morning, I woke up feeling like death, the smouldering fire next to me. My head lay next to George's feet and Victoria's makeup smudged face. I heard footsteps dragging on the dry grass. My eyes snapped opened and a slouching figure was hunched over staring at me. I stayed still for a few moments, awaiting the zombie to make a move. It blinked at me, its head tilted to the side. It wasn't until I saw the curly hair that I realised it was just Harry.
"Harry?"
He waved in response. I rose to my feet groggily to come face to face with my undead acquaintance. Before the whole world turning to shit thing happened, I probably would have never thought that being stuck with the most popular boy in school turned zombie would happen. I still hardly knew a thing about Harry Auburn, and it was hard to get to know a zombie.
"Did... I sc-care y-y-you?" Harry forced out, his lips trembling with the amount of effort he was putting into the short sentence.
"No, I thought it was you. I'm a bit numb to being scared at the moment anyways," I shrugged. Harry nodded sympathetically. "Is something on your mind?"
Harry wiped his chin as dribble seeped out of his blue lips. "Lots. Hard... To t-alk about..."
"I understand," I said, attempting to comfort him. I shook my head. "Well, I don't really understand, but..." I trailed off, unable to figure out what to say. Harry glanced at his feet.
"It's ok-ay," he croaked.
I watched him carefully for a few moments before leaning in and giving him a hug. Harry responded stiffly before hugging me back as humanly as he could. I heard him chuckle hoarsely. My head rested on his chest, Harry being somewhat taller than me. Something strange happened during that hug, though.
Harry had a heartbeat.
It was slow and irregular, but it was there.
Maybe there was hope for us after all.
"Harry..." I pulled away from him and put my hand over his chest. "You have a heartbeat,"
"Wha...?" He forced out, looking at me in shock. His glazed over eyes widened. He smiled.
The moment was interrupted by a loud shriek. I turned back to the group sleeping in a circle, now rudely awoken by Lace, who had woken herself and everyone else up by screaming. Her face was red and tear stained, fear plainly shown in her expression. She tried to calm down, her breathing erratic. Ryder leapt to her side and cradled her in his arms. Lace was shaking as Ryder tried to calm her down.
"Nightmares," West stated plainly as his escaped Greta's sleepy embrace and stood up. He ran a hand through his dishevelled hair. Nightmares, another thing we had to get used to. Finding your family dead can’t be too good for your mental health.
With Lace’s scream alarm, everyone was now awake. I hadn’t noticed when I first awoke, but Jack was perched above everyone on the roof of the truck. He was in some sort of trance-like state, fixated on a map and sometimes scribbling on it. He didn’t flinch when Lace screamed, so I don’t think he heard Harry and I’s heartbeat discovery. I didn’t trust Jack much, he only seemed to care about his own survival, and not everyone else’s. We were in this together now, even if we didn’t like it.
“Are we going back to our houses again today?” Cleo asked sleepily. She had lost hope for her family, but we had only been to Lace, Cleo, Jonah and Greta’s house so far. I didn’t particularly want to go to my house, knowing that nothing would be there for me to find or discover, and I knew that everyone else’s family was probably gone anyways. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it was what everyone was thinking.
Chris stood up and ruffled his short blonde hair, before answering the question. “After yesterday, I think we all need a break from what we saw or heard. We might be left in a shithole of a world but if we are going to survive, then hey, we need to cheer ourselves up or something so we have the will to keep going. I don’t know about you guys, but I say we have like… like a party or something,”
“I’m with Crispy, party time sounds good,” Jonah said, his eyes dark with bags. Jonah looked over to me for reassurance.
I shrugged. “Let the party begin,”

Greta and West sat cuddling next to the now raging fire. West whispered sweet nothings into Greta’s ear and she giggled before kissing him on the cheek. I was with Ryder and Chris sorting through some junk food they had scavenged for our party night, and really I couldn’t keep myself from staring at the happy couple. It made me sick how happy they were together, while I was just wallowing in self-pity and wanting to be the one cuddling with West. Life sucks.
“It’s so fucking hot!” Ryder proclaimed, whipping off his singlet. I wolf whistled at him and he proudly showed off his muscles. To be honest, I did think of Ryder as a close friend by now, but holy Odin the boy was attractive. Lace quickly raced over and threw herself in front of her man.
“Eyes off Sadie! This hot mess is mine!” She stated confidently, whipping her hair around and accidentally hitting Ryder in the face. Jonah wandered passed us casually brushing zombie blood off himself.
“Oh my god Ryder you are just sex on legs I swear,” Jonah winked at Ryder. Chris’s shoulders shook violently with laughter as Ryder looked around confused on how to react. I joined Chris in laughing. Lace laughed before hugging Ryder and petting him on the head like a puppy. All these couples I can’t.
“So what are we going to do tonight?” Victoria asked sheepishly, standing awkwardly around the fire. I actually didn’t know if her family was still alive or not, but how Jack told us about how they ended up stumbling toward us, I have a feeling they’re gone.
“I was thinking we feast on junk food first, then like dance around or something…” Chris trailed off, thinking of other fun things we could do.
“Truth or dare is a must,” I added.
“Spin the bottle!” West shouted out. Victoria smirked at his comment, while Chris’s cheeks went pink.
“We need to roast marshmallows!” Ryder said happily. Jonah licked his lips. This party was getting better and better. Maybe it was just because I was a kind of a loser and didn’t get invited to anything noteworthy. Cleo always got to go to parties. Damn Cleo always got to do the fun stuff and hang out with the popular kids. At this moment, reminiscing on all the parties I never went to, I decided to make this party one I will never forget. Considering it’s the end of the world and probably the only party I’ll ever go to, I should definitely make it count.
