1943 - Brooklyn, New York. Flashback

The night was colder than usual for Anna, she let out a huff and watched her hot breath disappear into the air. She pulled her scarf higher up her face and walked a little faster in the dark streets of Brooklyn. Her shift ended a little later than most days as she stayed behind to clean up coffee cups and pastry plates. There has been a surge of customers since America announced their entrance into World War Two. Many young girls came and went into the small café with soldiers, who might just be spending their last bit of life drinking a cup of coffee before they threw themselves straight into a warzone.

Lost in her thoughts, Anna walked up the creaky metal staircase that led to her apartment door. She was brought out of her trance when she heard a scream that came from her next door neighbour. Feeling a bit startled, she went to investigate the noise. The curtain by her neighbours window was slightly drawn open and she peeked through. She was surprised when she saw two...grown men...wrestling each other.

"Buck that hurt!" Anna saw a skinny, possibly 5'4 blonde male stand up and shout before he tossed a couch cushion towards a taller male across from him. Anna was able to get a good look at the male. He had slicked back dark brown hair, a chiseled jaw and a strong build. 'He's kind of cute...' Anna thought to herself.

"Sorry, not sorry punk, shouldn't have eaten my hotdog!" the taller male laughed before he launched himself at the smaller male and tackled the blonde to the floor. There was a loud thud and a couple of what sounded like plates falling onto the floor. Anna gasped out loud in which both males suddenly shot up and looked right out the window. Anna squeaked, feeling embarrassed that she was caught staring at her neighbours through their window. She quickly whipped out her keys, unlocked her front door and slammed it behind her.

"God they must think I'm weird..." Anna mumbled to herself and she placed her bag onto the floor. She hadn't ever seen the two males before, maybe because the curtains were always drawn closed and she woke up very early for work. They didn't look like brothers, maybe adopted siblings? Whatever it was, Anna felt her face go hot as she thought of the events that just happened. Shaking her head, she took a quick shower and headed for bed. Anna predicted tomorrow was going to be another long day, serving lots of coffee and sweet pastries to soldiers and their giggly female dates.

Anna woke up the next morning with a pulsing headache, it was probably from the lack of sleep. She groaned and forced herself to get her day started. Just like every other day, it was bread and jam for breakfast. Anna did not make a lot working at the café, but it paid the bills and left some extra money for food and clothes. Earning money was difficult during these times and Anna had the academic background to earn more, but she preferred to work at the café. The smell of freshly brewed coffee and old books in the café was nostalgic to her. Anna's mother used to work at a cafe and she would bring a lemon tart home for her after each shift. Since the death of her parents, she's attempted to recreate the recipe but has never been successful.

After she finished her morning coffee, she packed a sandwich for lunch and headed out the door. Upon opening her door, she rammed right into a hard object.
