✦ Chapter 14: Finished ✦
┅ISLA MADE HER way over to Finnick who waited in the long hallway behind the stage. He looked at her as if he wanted to say something, but decided against it as his gaze returned to the small screen identical to the one in the dressing room. Caesar greeted the crowd, and began speaking about the games and his thoughts on this year's events. Isla tuned it out until she heard her name.
"Now, for the moment you've all been waiting for... The girl we've all been dying to see again." He took a dramatic pause, staring out at the crowd as they giggled in excitement. "This year's victor of the Seventy Third Hunger Games- Isla Dunne!" He roared into the microphone, thrusting his hands toward the curtain in which Isla stepped out from behind. "Oh my-" He looked at the crowd with a toothy smile as she revealed herself.
She approached the man, and he clasped one of her hands in his, scanning over her. "Hello, dear." He greeted her, and she gave him a smile.
"It's nice to see you again Caesar." she responded politely. He grinned, looking at the crowd as he pointed at her.
"Doesn't she look stunning?" The crowd went ballistic as he let out his maniacal laugh. He motioned for the girl to sit, and then followed suit in the adjacent chair.
"Thank you," Isla blushed, folding her hands neatly in her lap.
"I have to say, you're looking much brighter than you were in the arena. The heat and dryness of that landscape must've been unbearable." He looked deep into her eyes, as if trying to gauge her reaction to his mentioning of the arena. He was testing to see how far he could push her when speaking of the games.
"Oh Caesar it was awful. The air was just filled with dust, I'll be coughing it up for weeks I'm sure!" She smiled, letting out a chuckle as the man laughed.
"And those nights, they sure were chilly, weren't they?" He leaned in, raising a brow. Isla felt her heart begin to race. She knew where this was going.
"Yes. They were extremely cold. We had to do whatever we could to survive them." She kept a straight face as she stared back into the man's analyzing gaze.
"You did it all just to survive?" He pressed, and Isla nodded her head.
"You can't think of anything else, not in there. Of course, you form friendships and bonds with your group, but in the end, it's all about survival."
"Would you say you had a close bond with Killian?"
Isla swallowed hard as she forced a smile. "He did some things I couldn't agree with, but he was from home." She repeated the same words Chiffon had used after Luster's death.
"You and Chiffon seemed to have also formed a strong alliance, aside from the others. What was the motive behind that?" Caesar continued to dig deep into Isla's wounds, and the crowd was eating it up.
