✦ Chapter 16: Desirable ✦
┅LUCIUS HAD DRESSED Isla in another metallic gown, replicating that of armour. A piece of fabric extended from the chest to her neck, wrapping around her neck like a choker and replacing the need for straps. The dress fell to the floor, the skirt sheer and revealing the metallic under-piece that covered her. Her knuckles adorned large metal rings, looking as if she wore brass knuckles. Her hair had been slicked back into a long ponytail that hung down her back. She looked powerful, despite how anxious she truly felt.
He asked her to walk around, and twiddle her fingers to test all components of her outfit. She watched as Lucius nodded in approval at her, pleased with his work. "I won't be there, you'll be going with Fleur. But you'll do fine, just keep to the people you know." Lucius informed the victor, spraying her hair as he flattened it to her head.
"Will there be a lot of people?" Isla asked naively. She knew it was likely a stupid question. However, her anxiety was all consuming at the thought of the crowds of Capitol officials she'd encounter.
"Yes, but not many will have the confidence to approach you. You're untouchable in their eyes. So act like it, and they'll only stare from afar."
Isla kept his advice in mind as Fleur came to retrieve her. They took a car to the mansion, the city alight with artificial lights as it was well passed dusk. Fleur was dressed in her most extravagant outfit, a sparkling black dress with sharp edges and a plunging neckline. Her heels resembled large boxes on her feet, adding several inches to her height.
The mansion came into view, colourful lights flashing across the large building. Loud music could be heard, and several overly dressed citizens walked about the gardens. Fleur hooked her arm through Isla's, holding her close as they approached the party. "This is all for you, my dear. All for you." She repeats herself, her eyes glistening as the flashing lights reflect off of them. Isla had to admit, it was breathtaking, but overwhelming for her, too. Fleur was just mesmerized, likely used to the commotion. It only flooded Isla's senses, making her uncomfortable. How could she be aware of her surroundings when her senses were clogged with the senseless noise, smells, and entertainment?
People began to line the walkway that led Isla inside of the mansion, citizens gawked at her as she approached. She remembered Lucius' words, and raised her chin high, ignoring them. She refused to make eye contact. Isla even unhooked her arm from Fleur as the escort led the way, who turned and watched with pride as her victor marched through the crowd. All of the onlookers seemed amazed at seeing her so up close, some made to reach out for her, to touch her clothes or arms, but seemed scare to do so. They'd curl their fingers back into their hands, giggling to one another as she passed.
"You've decided you're above everyone now?" Finnick's voice caught Isla's attention as she entered the mansion. She turned to see him leaning against a wall, a biscuit in his hand. He winked at her, taking a bite.
