The train had finally taken off, and Harry and the girl had developed a kind of companionable silence. Neither one of them spoke, but it wasn't the awkward quiet that had occurred when she first joined Harry. She read a book; Harry didn't recognize it.
And Harry just sat there; he couldn't fall asleep again. He guessed it was because the girl was present. After maybe two minutes, the girl sighed and put her book down. She looked over to Harry, who had his eyes closed.
"Are you even allowed to bring your snake to Hogwarts?" Harry opened his eyes slightly, sitting up to look at the girl.
"No." She blinked once, and Harry smiled.
"Aren't you going to get in trouble then?" Harry's smile widened at her confusion.
"Nope," Harry said; he slumped down and crossed his arms, his smile never fading. The girl looked at him blankly, the cogs in her mind turning. A lightbulb must have finally gone off because she made a small 'O' with her mouth.
"You're not going to let anyone see him?" He nodded and smirked, amused that it took her a while. Her eyes twinkled lightly with mischief. She leaned back in her seat and mirrored his smirk, her hands in her lap. After a second, she sat back up in her chair and pulled out a light wand.
"What's your wand look like?" She looked at Harry and watched as he pulled out his darker wand. Her eyes lit up at it, and she observed it keenly.
"Could I?" She asked hesitantly while her hands were extended. Harry wondered if he should let her. He thought he should say no because he didn't honestly know this girl. A wizard's wand was a very precious item, and it was not to be thrown around willy-nilly.
"Sure." For some reason, he barely even thought about it. Harry had a strange trust in her; he handed it over without even really considering. She looked at it in fascination; Harry snuffed a laugh.
"I haven't seen any wands other than my mother's and mine! This is so cool!" Her excited words and happy aura infected Harry, and he grinned. She handed it back to him, and he tucked it away in his pocket. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ They made meaningless chit-chat the rest of the way. Other than the lady with the cart coming around, nobody entered. They both bought their own sweets; Harry chose not to buy every flavor beans this time. It was a surprisingly companionable silence for two strangers.
And after Harry left to change, they were fast approaching Hogwarts. Harry wondered why Hermione never came to ask about Neville's toad. Maybe she found it before she had to ask the farther back compartments? Harry decided he shouldn't wonder about it as it wasn't necessary.
"We will be reaching Hogwarts in five minutes. Please leave your luggage on the train; it will be taken to school separately." Boomed a voice through the train. Harry saw the girl was already standing up. Harry stood up as well, holding Rio carefully. He walked over to the empty cage.
"You'll have to go in here now; I'll see you soon." Rio flicked his tail dismissively, seeming to still be annoyed with Harry. Harry rolled his eyes as he placed Rio in his container, closing the top and putting the cage in his trunk. When he turned to his side, he saw the girl was looking at Ehno.
"He's a really handsome owl." She commented out of nowhere. Harry did agree with her; though he wasn't Hedwig, he was pretty as she was.
"Have you got an owl?" He asked, truthfully curious. She looked up from the sleeping Ehno and straightened herself to look directly at Harry.
"Yeah, I do; she's a snowy owl. I was so lucky to have found her! Mother's going to send her here with a letter. She wanted me to get to school before I had her here." Harry thought that was reasonable. The small conversation was stopped when the train finally slowed to a stop.
She was first out the door, waiting for Harry before they both walked down the train's corridor. They followed the crowd of students until they left the train and walked onto the small platform. Harry saw Hagrid immediately, the half-giant standing out with a lantern in hand.
"Firs' years! Firs' years over here!" Hagrid's voice was loud and was easily heard over any chit-chat. The first years flocked to the man like sheep, Harry, and the girl included. Hagrid seemed to notice Harry after all the first years were finally together.
"Harry! Got you a new friend?" Hagrid gave the girl next to him a goofy grin, and she was unable to resist smiling back. Hagrid continued his herding of the students, leading them down the path to the boats. Harry saw all the people he recognized. Neville had his toad in his hand.
The path opened to where a vast black lake, the boats sitting calmly on the surface. The other students made noises of awe as they could now see Hogwarts. Harry couldn't blame them, even he had stars in his eyes as he looked at the castle.
"No more'n four to a boat!" Hagrid called as the first years started to climb aboard. Harry ended up in a boat with that girl, Hermione, and a boy he didn't recognize. It was an awkward environment as nobody except him and the girl knew each other.
Hagrid had seen that everyone was in and shouted at the boats, causing them to take off toward the castle. Unlike last time, everyone wasn't quiet. There was some subtle chattering from the vessels surrounding Harry, though most seemed too in amazement to talk.
"Pretty, isn't it?" Said the girl, and Harry did indeed think Hogwarts was rather outstanding.
"Very." She smiled slightly and continued to admire the castle, the other two people in the boat did just the same. They quickly came to an underground harbor, and the students exited the boats. The group of kids watched as Hagrid observed them for a moment before turning to walk up a passageway.
The first years climbed up after him, huffing and puffing as most were not used to walking up steep paths. Soon they were crowded around a large oak dark, Hagrid stopping and turning to them once more.
"Everyone here?" Some choose to nod, while most just blinked at the half-giant. Hagrid nodded at that and turned to knock on the door exactly three times. The girl tapped on Harry's shoulder. He looked at her questioningly.
"Harry?" She asked, a cautious look on her face. Harry raised an eyebrow at that.
"Yes?" She fiddled with her robes for a second before a determined look came across her features briefly.
"I think you and I should stick together at Hogwarts. Both of us would probably be better off having a friendly face around..." He stared at her for a second, not expecting that. Was she asking to be his friend? He knew he couldn't refuse that; she was right about it being nice to see a friendly face.
"I think you are right." She looked up into his eyes and smiled at him; he grinned back. Their bonding session was cut short by a door being slammed open and McGonagall standing in the doorway. Harry wasn't really paying attention as she introduced herself and led them into the castle.
His mind was both months ahead and minutes behind. He thought more of the girl. Would she be betrayed when she found out he was Harry Potter? Most likely. Harry felt surprisingly guilty about that. Harry also was thinking of what to do now that he was a Hogwarts.
Probably not much more than the first time. There was only so much an eleven-year-old could do. This time he wouldn't waste time. He'd have to find a way to rid of that teacher. Was there even a way? He was going to find out soon enough.
Sorry peeps, this should have been out awhile ago. My butt has been slacking...Hope you enjoyed anyway, even though not a lot happened.
