"Are you sure you're mom won't mind me tagging along?" Amity asked nervously as she carefully stepped over the portal's threshold.
"Of course not!" Luz smiled, placing a gentle hand on Amity's back to help the witchling maintain her balance. "In fact, it was her idea to invite you over for lunch."
"Well, that was very kind of her," Amity hummed softly. "So tell me again, what are we celebrating today?"
"Oh! It's Mother's Day," Luz grinned as she shut the portal door closed before the pair began to make their way. "Its the day that we humans celebrate our moms to thank them for all that they've done for us."
"Oh, I see," Amity nodded, following along as the pair made their way, "That sounds really sweet."
"It is!" Luz skipped excitedly, "and its not just limited to moms too which is the best part - its for anyone who has taken on the role of a mother!"
"What do you mean?" Amity asked innocently, the concept of 'family' still relatively new to the girl given the turmoils caused by her previous adoptive parents.
"Well, for example," Luz spoke after a moment, "My mamí was raised by her tia after her mamí got sick and passed away."
"Tia?"
"Oh! That means auntie in Spanish," Luz smiled as the pair rounded the corner to Luz's house.
"Ah, I see," Amity nodded, "so because her tia is who raised her, that is who your mamí celebrates today?"
"Yes, indeed!" Luz smiled happily. "They went out for breakfast this morning while my dads' helped me make my mom's favorite Dominican meal - mofongo. I can't wait for you to try it! Its made with plantains and garlic and chicharrón and ahh, its just so good! Mamí absolutely loves it. I had never made it before today but since I stayed with my Papá last night, he and my Apá were able to help me prepare it for her!"
"Thats so sweet, Luz," Amity smiled fondly, thinking back to the first time she had met Luz's father and his husband. "Will they be joining us as well?"
"Unfortunately no," Luz shook her head. "Once they finished helping me set up Mamí's house this morning, they had to head out of town to visit my Apá's mamí. They did leave her a card a bouquet of flowers though so I think she'll be quite happy with the surprise! Chances are the three of them will get dinner later in the week anyways," Luz smiled as she dug in her pockets for her keys before spotting Camila's car in the driveway as the pair approached. "Oh! Mamí must have just got home!" Luz squealed in excitement as she ran up the driveway to grab the door, Amity quickly hobbling behind, breathing a light hearted chuckle.
"Mija!" Camila smiled as she opened the front door, a grin on her face as she enveloped her daughter in her arms. "I heard your voice clear across the house," Camila chuckled.
"Happy Mother's Day, Mamí!" Luz grinned, hugging her mother with a ferocity Amity had only ever witnessed Luz display.
"Oh Amity!" Camila said, looking up from her daughter after several moments as her eyes landed on the witchling quietly looking on. "Cariño, what happened to your leg?"
"H...hello Dr. Noceda! H...happy Mother's Day!" Amity smiled, shifting awkwardly, nervous in the older woman's presence despite having spent plenty of time together. "I um, I got into an accident playing grudgby at PE a couple weeks back but it doesn't hurt as bad anymore."
"Well thank you, Amity, and that's good to hear," Camila hummed gently, as she approached the girl who insisted on calling her 'Dr. Noceda' long beyond the need for formalities, carefully wrapping an arm around her shoulders, "even so, why don't you come inside and have a seat. I'm not sure what Luz has cooking up but it smells amazing." Smiling as she looked from Amity to her daughter, Camila began slowly walking back towards the house, the witchling in tow "Luz, mija, can you grab Amity a cushion for her leg from the living room and we will meet you in the kitchen for lunch?"
