Toby hated this

Toby hated this. As if this school-like situation was not bad enough already, he now also had homework. Toby went home and lay on his bed, staring at the ceiling for a very long time. He thought of many things that day; chocolate tarts, the ministry, his next meal, and Charlotte. Well, Daniel, to be more precise. He was tired of being the underdog, the loser.

"I," he said to himself, "am done being the loser."

"I'm done being the loser," he screamed as he stood upon his bed, his hands on the waist, chin up. But then he purposely fell on his pillow and took a nice long nap.

Elsewhere Charlotte was doing what she was told, diligently at that. She tried doing little things wherever she could but to no avail. She tried doing the water thing again. Charlotte sat in her lavender bubble bath and tried really hard to make the water disappear. The bathwater disappeared all right after a solid 15 minutes of intense staring. But, along with it also disappeared the water from the entire house. She was unsure whether to take it as a success or a failure. So, she took it as a sign to stop before creating any further disasters in her home. She prepared to go to bed while mentally going over all that she would require to do tomorrow and all that she learned today. It still felt like too much for her. She needed to vent.

Charlotte dialled a number but disconnected as soon as it started ringing. Five minutes later, her phone rang.

"Charlotte, you called?" spoke a concerned Daniel in his thick Scottish accent.

"Uh ... hey Daniel. It's...nothing, um, I'm sorry I disturbed you. I shouldn't have called. Yeah, okay, so you should go back to sleep now." a very awkward and embarrassed Charlotte answered.

"Hey, hey. We're already talking, now aren't we? Tell me what's wrong. You sound tense. And awkward. But mostly tense." chuckled Daniel while still sounding incredibly gentle. It made Charlotte want to spill all her worries.

"It's about the whole world crisis thing isn't it?" he asked while somehow already aware of the answer.

"Yeah, yes." Charlotte weakly replied. "It's just that, I... I don't know. It's just there's so much pressure on us...on me right now. I know I'm not supposed to feel this way because I am saving the world or whatever, but that doesn't change the fact that my life has completely derailed for it. Aurelia isn't being too helpful either. And Toby, he's an idiot. He's with me in this, but I feel as attached to him as an atheist with his God. And..."

Charlotte went on for nearly an hour, opening up every aspect of what she was going through to him. It felt so fluid, so right to her. And Daniel listened. He listened to her and said all the right things at the right moments. It was magical to her how she felt so comfortable with a person she had met only once. Charlotte was what you would call a strong, independent young woman who let nobody know her weaknesses. Today, she let her vulnerabilities out and laid them in the open for a stranger. And she liked it.
