Four days passed, and I was never able to come across Amy. Even in the mornings around seven, when I knew that she would be in the building, I could never spot her. The Colonel prevented me from sending her any type of note to the employee area, and he made sure that Jerry and John kept their eyes on me as well. How annoying.
Maybe I would see her during my concert. I peeked through the curtain on the stage set up on the fairgrounds, right next to the base of the tall Space Needle, to see if I could see her on the crowd gathering there. The tickets for this little show were out a few months ago, so hopefully she got one. Had she been to any of my other concerts?
"Elvis, get behind the curtain or they'll see you," The Colonel chided, and I put the navy-blue curtain back in place and faced him. "You're looking for Miss Kim, aren't you?"
I smiled guiltily. "Nothin' gets passed you, Colonel."
"Hey, I know that you've been looking for her since you saw her last. I doubt that she's even out there."
I shrugged a shoulder. "Ya never know."
The band went out onto the stage to get into place. The people out there started to get excited, cheering and such, but when they saw the band and the back-up vocals, they simmered down. That was amusing, and flattering. I knew they were waiting for me.
"Elvis, are you ready?" asked Freddy, the stage manager. He was usually at my concerts, managing affairs on the stage. "The natives are getting restless."
"I'm ready," I said and straightened out my jacket. I chose to go casual, wearing a brown leather jacket over a white polo and blue slacks. This was a fair, after all. I wanted to relate to my fans out there. "Here we go."
A stagehand gave me my tan acoustic guitar, and I went over to the side of the stage. I heard an announcer shout from the speakers, "Welcome, ladies and gentlemen of Seattle! Are you ready?" Screams, cheers and claps. "Here is Mr. Elvis Presley!"
The screams became ear-splitting as I walked out onto the stage, and everyone saw me. A good portion of the fair grounds were cleared for this concert at the base of the Space Needle. The crowd went out passed the tall, thin building half-a-mile, it seemed. Not unusual for my concerts. In fact, I was used to there being ten times this many people, and in an amphitheater. I waved at them all as I came up to the microphone. I automatically scanned all the faces that I could see well. She wasn't in sight.
"Hello, ladies and gentlemen!" I greeted them, and they cheered and screamed in response. "Thank you so much for havin' me here in this great city of Seattle, Washington. Now, y'all had a great time at the fair?" Screams again. "Glad to hear it! I have to say, I had a grand time as well. As many of you know, I'm here to film a movie called It Happened at the World's Fair. It's about a young man named Mike Edwards, and his work partner and pal Danny find themselves in need of a job, so they come to Seattle to see what kinds of jobs are available. While there, Mike takes a little girl to the World's Fair, and he meets a lady named Diane who he eventually falls in love with. It's gonna be a cute little flick that I hope y'all will enjoy, and I'm happy to reveal that it will be out in theaters next month."
The crowd went insane. It was a good time to play and sing my first song. I got my guitar ready. "Now, ladies and gentlemen, I'm gonna give ya a little prelude to the movie by singin' for ya a song that's gonna be in the movie. It's about goin' to the fair. I thought it fitting for an obvious reason."
I strummed and started playing. My mouth opened to sing the first word to the song, but I spotted something in the crowd. Someone. My mouth stretched into a grin. She came! And boy, did she look beautiful with her straight black hair going to her waist.
