Uriah has been recovering from his coma for the past week. I have been visiting him and Tobias regularly and I have been getting more sleep.
I am sitting on the same blue plastic chair in Tobias’ room, holding his hand tightly when a doctor enters the room.
“He will be taken off life support in two weeks if he doesn’t wake up or show any sign of movement or consciousness.” He said.
“What! No!” I shouted.
“I’m sorry.” He stated then left the room.
I slumped in the chair and cried.
Christina comes into the room and sees me crying. She rushes over and gives me a comforting hug.
“What’s wrong?” She asks, clueless of what just happened.
“To-Four…2 weeks…” I couldn’t help my self, I burst out crying.
I think Christina gets what I am trying to say and her face drops. She pulls me into a tight embrace and tries to calm me down.
“Why don’t we go for a walk, take your mind off him?” She asks soothingly.
She pulls me up from the chair and I reluctantly follow her out the door. When we get outside I feel the fresh air hit my face for the first time in ages. I see Uriah’s big perfect white teeth smiling at us as he runs towards us to greet us.
“Hi Tris, Christina.” He said nodding in our direction.
“Watcha doin’” He asks.
“Getting away from reality.” I reply bluntly.
“What happened?” Uriah asked.
“Four. The plug is being pulled in two weeks.” I reply as a sob starts to rack my body.
Uriah and Christina both hug me and try to comfort me.
I can’t take this anymore so I run. I run back to Tobias’ room and cry. I hold his hand, it seems like the perfect time for him to wake up, to say that he is here for me but I know that’s not going to happen. I look up at Tobias and the heart monitor, rising in sharp points at a steady pace. Just the thought of not having Tobias here, for the rest of my life just makes my heart drop.
…
Two weeks have past and today is the day that Tobias has to wake up or they will pull the plug. I can’t believe that this is happening. That they can’t just keep him on a bit longer. He has shown no sign of movement and I am afraid of loosing him forever.
A doctor comes in the room followed by Christina and the ‘Gang’.
He looked at me gravely, sadly.
“I’m very sorry but I think his time is up.”
