“Cinder,” The nickname I despised followed by a persistent pounding on the door. “The neckline on my dress is too high! Fix it!” Genève yells through the door.
I sigh. “One moment, Genève,” I reply as I delicately put one of the last nearly invisible stitches through the silk ribbon accentuating Eudora’s waist.
“She’s still working on my dress.” Eudora suddenly turns.
I sharply inhale, “Be careful!”
“Can’t you just do mine really quickly?” She cracks the door to peek in, “I need to impress Prince Lucian.”
“Mother would be so proud if he chose one of us to be his queen.” Eudora flutters her lashes.
Suddenly realization showed on Genève’s face. “Eudora,” she meaningfully shifts her glance towards me.
“Oh, um, I’m sorry.”
“It’s, it’s not your fault Zylphia won’t let me go.” I bite off the end of the thread and tie it.
“Oh, but I’m sure it won’t help to have us chatting about the balls, and the music, and the food, and the prince,” Genève twirls, her dress billowing gracefully around her.
I laugh humorlessly, “No, it won’t.” My eyes sweep over Eudora one last time. “Okay,”
“My turn,” Genève steps closer.
I smile patiently, “Oh, no wonder! You’re tying the collar wrong! See, it ties to the shoulders and hooks in the back, like this.”
“Oh, well that’s not so bad.” She admires herself in the mirror.
“Cinder,” I hear from downstairs.
“Yes, Zylphia, I’m coming.”
