Commander climbed to the top of the small building that Sniper was supposed to be posted on, only the moon illuminating his figure. His coat flapped in the wind as he looked over the wrecked city before him.

Most of the buildings were destroyed, if not turned completely to rubble and ash. What happened here? Commander wondered to himself.

The bottom of his boots were caked in dust, and tiny pieces of rocks crunched beneath his feet. He found it unpleasant,  but it was his duty to seek the best strategies. Of course he didn't do this all himself, his boss planned out the majority of it, whoever they were.

Boss was a mystery to him. Everyone always assumes that orders always come from commander, but they mostly come from the boss. Commander only refines them.

Commander coughed, and he could see his breath in the air. Maybe it was colder than he realized.

The stars hung low in the sky, outfitting the moon perfectly. Not a single cloud in the sky. It would be day soon, so he finished scouting out the area and went back to the base.

The base wasn't exactly a base. Haphazardly built buildings with tin roofs and a few large tents. It didn't seem like much, but it was home. Commander dragged his boots on the pavement, getting some of the dust off. He hoped it didn't wake anyone up.

Walking inside the main building, he passed the (temporary) mess hall on his way to his room. The smell of French toast filled the air. They didn't have a whole lot to cook, so this was the usual breakfast. Soldier was probably the one cooking, he seemed to like it anyway.

Commander opened the door to his room and stepped inside. It wasn't anything special. They just repurposed the most in-tact building anyway. The paint was peeling off the walls and it always smelled like burnt popcorn. Commander sighed. This was just the way of life here.

Shortly after sitting down, there was a knock on the door. Commander got up with a slight huff and opened the door. Scout greeted him with a friendly, tired, smile. "Ah" He said. "Just making sure you're awake. How did you sleep?"

"Pretty good. Thank you." Commander lied, knowing that he didn't sleep at all.

"Already dressed, I see." Scout pointed down the hall. "Breakfast is ready. French Toast.. again."

Commander nodded. "I'll be there soon."

"Alright, see you then, Commander." Scout gave him a playful salute before strolling away.

Commander grabbed his walkie talkie and pistol, then walked off as well.

The mess hall used to be a restaurant before this. Or, at least it looked like it was. Tables were tipped, a few chairs were broken, and some windows were busted out. But after some cleaning and TLC, it seemed good as new (for the most part).

Commander walked into the Mess Hall. He never really ate breakfast, but did paperwork sometimes just so the room felt more lively.

Scout, Demoman, and a few others were in the room getting their food and chatting. DJ walked into the room and it just seemed to glow. He always had a strange effect on everyone around him, and it seemed to get everyone in a good mood.

DJ sat down across from Commander at his table. "Not eating anything, again?" DJ questioned. This was pretty normal. DJ and Commander were usually stationed together outside on the field, so they had become pretty good friends after a while.

"Shush." Commander said. "It's not that I don't want to eat, I'm just not hungry." He looked back down at his paperwork. "Plus, more food for you guys too. We've been getting low."

"That is no excuse!" DJ announced. "I'm getting you something, you're skin and bones."

Commander shrugged it off as DJ went to grab him something, but he thought about it for a moment. He WAS getting pretty skinny.

Whatever. It makes me look taller and more.. uh.. refined? He thought. Commander was already taller than most of the group. He wasn't sure what to think about DJ's remark.

DJ returned with a plate of French toast. "There. Eat up." DJ crossed his arms and looked at Commander.

Commander huffed quietly. "Fine, don't expect me to do this again, though."

"Yeah! That's the spirit!" DJ said happily, smiling. "See you on the field Commander."

Commander didn't usually smile, but this time he let a small one crack. He ate the French toast reluctantly, but managed to finish it so he wouldn't need to lie if DJ asked later.

Grabbing his paperwork, he went back to his room and dropped it off, before promptly walking outside as the sky's brilliant colors began to settle in.

The day was just getting started.
