Chapter Three:
“I’m glad you’re here, Carter has something she wants to tell you.” Kaylynn said.
Ross looked at me expectantly.
“What are you doing here?” I was smiling as I walked towards him.
“I came to see my beautiful fiancé.” He held out the flowers.
“Red roses, my favorite.” I smiled as I took them out of his hands.
“What did you want to tell me?” He asked, slinging his arm over my shoulder.
“Oh that,” I mumbled, “Rosie, could you put these flowers in a vase?” I passed them to her.
“Sure thing,” she replied.
“I’ll go help her,” Kaylynn put my phone back on the bar, and followed Rosie to the sink.
“What’s going on?” Ross asked.
I took my jacket off the hook and grabbed Ross’s hand. We took the elevator up to the roof top garden. It was the only area of the building where smoking was permitted, but I’d kind of adapted this as my “zen zone”. Since coming to this beautiful city, my stress levels had started to rise, so I picked up yoga. Doing that early in the morning gave me a more peaceful outlook for the rest of my day.
There were vines hanging off of arch ways, flowers in pots placed sporadically around, as well as patio chairs and a gorgeous view of the city. It was late afternoon and the sky was starting to turn shades of orange and red, making it look like a divine painting. Before I spoke I took in a few calming deep breaths. I knew he had no reason to be mad but, Kaylynn was right, I should have told him first. He should have been the first person I called. I was going to spend the rest of my life with him as his wife and if I couldn’t lean on him what type of relationship would we have?
“Carter, babe, what’s wrong?” Ross took both of my hands.
“I should have told you this first, but I didn’t want Andre to kill us before we get married.” I started.
“What?” Ross was confused.
“You were on tour and you were busy, and I didn’t want to jeopardize that.” I explained further.
I was doing this backwards and I knew I was just messing myself up further.
“I’m not following,” He said.
“I saw Camila yesterday.” I said, “She was here in my apartment, with Grant. I thought somebody broke into my apartment, and I armed myself with a cast-iron pan. I ended up knocking Grant onto the floor, and Camila and I got into a huge fight.”
“What was the fight about?” Ross asked.
“What the fight was about isn’t what I’m going to tell you, what I’m going to tell you is that they eloped. Camila and Grant eloped.” I said, “It stressed me out so badly that I had to got talk to the on-campus therapist earlier today.”
“Why didn’t you call me? You know I would have been here sooner than I was.” He put his hands on both sides of my face.
“I didn’t call you because I didn’t want you to come to me unnecessarily. You were on tour, you were doing your job. I didn’t want you to have to drop all of your responsibilities and come to New York.” I replied.
“You’re right, my job is my responsibility, but you are my number one priority. You are the most important person to me, I love you more than anything else in the world. I would drop anything for you, and you know that. I love you so much.” He put his forehead on mine.
