First off, what is an online war?
Well, in my opinion, it's:
1. When multiple friends start having a conflict over something, and then intentionally or not, they start fighting over it and taking the conflict more seriously for fun, and then sides start to form.
2. When multiple sides start forming over a conflict that just popped up out of nowhere, causing people that never interacted before to start interacting to defeat the opposite side.
3. When someone declares war because of something, and then the other person accepts, and both make sides. So basically, multiple people starting a 'war' because of some issue. These wars are usually for fun and could be just roleplay, so people rarely take them too seriously. It can be between friends that already know each other beforehand, to different people from the same community that never interacted before beginning to interact because of the conflict, to people who really don't have connections with each other teaming up in the war, basically everyone.
I do not advise taking online wars too seriously, as some feelings may genuinely get hurt if someone accidentally goes too far. As I said, Online wars are usually just for fun and chaos, and it's usually gives people a chance to meet new people. I myself have gained a lot of new friends since I participated in a lot of wars. It could give you a chance to be involved in whatever community you are in, and gain some new and fantastic online memories!Online wars usually consists of two to more sides, some being main sides, some being supporting/spectator sides.
The main sides are the competing ones, trying to win the war. In order for a full on war to start, there must be at least 2 active sides, but there can be more.
Meanwhile, the supporting/spectator sides, which could sometimes be referred to as neutral sides, are sides that aren't really actively trying to win the war, but are still influencing the war in some way, shape or form, whether intentional or not.Examples of main sides:
- HPC and SoA
Some people that are from the same fandom as I may have already heard of this war and two sides. HPC was a side that was against writing angst stories with certain MCYTs from hermitcraft, especially the ones that include death. On the opposite side, SoA encouraged the writing of angst stories and stories with violence and death. And so, during the war, these two sides were actively trying to beat each other, making both the main sides.
- Boops vs Anti-Boopers
This war wasn't a big one, and more of a mini one which only stuck within a small group of people. It started because of the "You have been booped! send this message to 20 other amazing authors" message that was practically everywhere on wattpad. A group of people continued to spread them, the ones actively serving in the war getting called boopers. After a while, some began to oppose the boopers, calling themselves anti-boopers.Examples of Support/spectator sides:
- MIC
Some of you may have known what this side is. It's from the same war as the HPC vs SoA, it's a group of anonymous people that offered info about both sides. They weren't fighting in the war directly, but they ended up being a big influence to the ending of the war.
- FIB
While not that active, this side was another side from the HPC vs SoA war. Unlike any of the two sides, this side supported flangst (AKA Hurt/comfort). This side was also mostly just neutral, having no secrets to hide. It was just a neutral side that didn't influence the war that much, but was still a side nevertheless.
