Once in the 6th Formers' room, I carelessly threw my bag onto the desk and rummaged for my maths book. I had been staring at the almost impossible equations for what seemed like years, scribbling down workings that I knew were wrong, pressing random buttons on a calculator in hope of stumbling across the answer.
When would we even need to solve simultaneous equations with the substitution method in future life, anyway?
"Do you need help?" He pulled a chair up to my desk while I stared, stunned.
Why would Phil Lester talk to me?
"I covered this a few weeks ago," he continued. I stayed silent, too anxious to speak in fear of saying something wrong. I tried my hardest not to drown in his eyes.
He coughed awkwardly before pointing to my workings. "You . . . erm . . . went slightly wrong there . . . and there."
Phil was in the top maths group. He was top set in everything. He started explaining the method as clearly as he could with that beautiful voice of his while I dreamily gazed at his gorgeous face while pretending to pay attention. A few minutes had passed before he stopped talking and looked at me.
"You haven't said anything . . . do you understand or should I go through it again?"
He's so caring.
"No! Nah, I get it now."
Intelligent words had come into my mind and they balanced gracefully on my tongue, ready to come out clear and casual. Then I looked at his face again and at his slightly crooked smile and his wide ocean eyes and I glimpsed at the way he slides his fingers through his fringe and the words clumsily fell out of my mouth and quivered in the air.
"Okay, do you want to try a question by yourself?"
"Yeah, sure."
I spent a while trying to complete the simple question Phil had prepared for me before he kindly told me that I should watch him answer it first. I actually tried to listen. It didn't work.

I wanted to walk home alone that day. Chris easily obliged. I spent the time thinking and thinking. Thoughts constantly running through my mind about how stupid I was earlier that day - the way I acted around Phil. I was completely hypnotised by him. Just to be near him was like a drug.
There was a small wood I had to walk through to find my house. However I had a phobia of dark forests. During the day I was less cautious.
The sounds around me sounded more crisp and the breeze felt more prominent. Colours around me were more apparent, especially since it was early spring-time we were experiencing.
I smiled as a small blue butterfly fluttered around me. I slowly held out my hand for it to land on.
The creature was facing me when an eyelash or a piece of dirt or dust settled in my right eye. I closed that one eye to ease the irritation and kept the other one open to be alert for danger.
I winked. At the butterfly. It fell dead.
