It had been three weeks since my birthday. The photograph album was already halfway filled up. It was a Wednesday, but we had the whole week off school for Spring Break.
I got up early, at about 8;00, and quickly got dressed. I put on a pair of jeans, red converse sneakers, a black and white striped shirt, and a red jacket. I did my auburn-brown hair up in a messy bun, and I grabbed my camera case before heading downstaiirs to a breakfast of Lucky Charms and orange juice. I loved Lucky Charms so much. I could live off them.
My mom was at work, as was my dad. I didn't have any siblings, so I called Kylla up and asked her what she wanted to do. Apparently we were going to the beach.
You see, we have this big beach here where we live in California. Its awesome, cause its right next to my neighborhood. My school is also in my neighborhood, and I purposely didn't ride my bike past it. Kylla joined me as I past her house, and we rode in silence.
Kylla was wearing a pair of blue jeans, and a purple shirt that said DIVA on it in big green letters. It perfectly described her!
We arrived at the beach at about 9:30. It was still pretty chilly out, so we didin't wade in the water or anything. We just walked around, found seashells to add to our already GINORMOUS collection, and took pictures. I took pictures of her around the beach, doing funny poses, funny faces, and she took some of me. Eventually, around 11:30, we got hungry. I bought us each a soda and a sandwich with my allowance money.
She was about to treat us both to ice cream when I saw it. The perfect place to take a picture. It was a cove, and it was surrounded by rocks and moss. We had never seen it, because we had never ventured out this far before. I grabbed Kylla's arm, causing her to almost drop the ice cream cones she had purchased.
"Come on!" I called to her, pulling her by the arm to the cove. She handed me a cone when we stopped. Yum. Peppermint. My favorite. I took a lick, and we sat in the rocks for a minute, enjoying the cold treat. When they were gone however, I unzipped my case and pulled my camera out.
"Now go stand over there." I instructed her, pointing to a place against a wall. It was covered with mossy vines, and wet flowers. It would be perfect. She stood against the wall, and snapped picture after picture.
Eventually, we both got bored of it.
"Lets go further into the cave!" Kylla exclaimed.
"Nah...."
"Come on! It will be fun!" and with that, she ran towards the entrance. I grudgingly followed her, warily keeping an eye out for bugs, or snakes. I'm scared to death of them.
FInally, Kylla got tired and stopped. We were a ways away from the opening.
Suddenly, we heard voices. We peered over a wall/rock and saw two people standing there. Well, one person. The other person was laying down on their back. The man standing up was wearing all black, and was holding a knife, or at least thats what I thought it was, with the little light coming in. I spotted something amazing just then. A crack in the rocks had just a little bit of sunshine coming through it, with water on the ground bouncing the beams around making rainbow designs on the walls.
"I have to get a picture!" I whispered excitedly to Kylla.
"No Karlie!" she whispered back. "That guys got a knife!"
I didn't listen. I quickly lifted up my camera, snapping a quick shot, and then lowered it again. Unforunately, I forgot my camera made a clicking noise when taking a picture. The small, usual barely audible 'click' echoed in the quiet cove. The man looked up and his eyes narrowed. Uh-oh. Time to go. Kylla and I ran for our life, hearing the footsteps clattering behind us. We had barely reached the opening, when the footsteps stopped. We turned around cautiously. We shouldn't have. The man was still there, staring at us. He couldn't get us on the beach, that was for sure. Too many people were around. We didn't even know WHY he wanted to get us. But he knew what our faces looked like now. And I had a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach that he would come for us.
We ran all the way to our bikes, then rode to my house as quickly as we could.
