Karla didn't know what to do the next few days. John hadn't shown any interest in her and was acting like she was invisible. He didn't talk to her in Chem or answer her texts. It was like they had nothing over the last month. By this point it was late April and the weather was starting to warm up so Karla was starting to wear more spring like clothes. She didn't know if it was because she had finally told John about Rune or what but it would be nice to know what exactly happened. Karla honestly thought that her and John were getting along.
"What has gotten your butt in a twist?" Charlie asked.
"Oh its that noticeable. I'm sorry. I didn't mean for it to be. Just honestly thinking if there is something wrong with me. Because I thought me and John were getting long great and now he wont even give me the time of day." Karla replied.
At that moment, Karla knew that she shouldn't have opened her mouth. Charlie was possibly going to tell her that she was right. That she should never have gotten that close to a boy because it would more than likely lead her here. To a broken heart and leaving her confused on what she did wrong.
"You did nothing wrong. He had been giving you the cold shoulder on and off for roughly 2 months. Its no ones fault that he cant see how great of a person you are." Charlie stated.
Karla knew that she was right because it didn't help with how she was feeling. With the empty feeling like something was missing. Karla had gotten use to John around and it was weird to not have him around anymore. Karla noticed that John wasn't looking at her anymore and the moments that she did catch over the last week, they were more of looks of guilt for not telling her something. Karla wanted nothing more than to know what his secret was but she also knew that she couldn't force him to tell her if he couldn't even talk to her.
"You know that John was looking at you again." Genevieve asked when they got into the house that friday afternoon.
"If he did he made sure i didn't know. Hes been giving me the cold shoulder ever since last weekend when we got into our fight. Apparently i did something wrong but he doesn't want to communicate so we can move past this." Karla replied.
"Well then just move on. You don't need him. If he wants to be with you he will find a way to put on his big boy pants and apologize for it." Genevieve stated.
Karla laughed at it because she knew that it was true. She did need to at least try to move on. It was doing no one any good when she was walking around looking like a walking zombie. Since Genevieve had to go to work, Karla thought it would be a good idea to possibly get some shopping done. There was food in the house yes. But there was nothing sweet considering that her father Martin was home with the possibility of their mother coming home this weekend. Their parents always wanted to make sure that Karla and Charlie ate well but when they were gone it was mostly food that their parents wouldn't approve of. Charlie smiled when she saw Karla at the end of the drive.
"If you're going to the store you might as well get a half gallon of mint chip ice cream. You look like you need it and i have been craving it." Charlie stated.
"Do you need anything else? Like anything else you've been craving for your period?" Karla asked.
It was no secret that they were usually in sink when it came to this stuff. When one was about the start the other wasn't that far behind. Karla was planning on getting a few things for herself but she didn't mind getting a few things for Charlie as well. This was usually how it went. When one went to the store to do the major shopping but also would get a few things that would be great to snack on. It was mostly twizzlers and skittles but they usually went to the ice cream for heartbreak and that time of the month.
"I don't know. If you want i can go with you. Apparently mom is coming home and shes probably going to go all doctor on us. Like 'why is there ice cream in the freezer' and 'why are there sweets'." Charlie stated.
Karla laughed at this. Probably her first genuine laugh this week. But it was true. As much as their dad understood why there were sweets in the house it was their mom who had a period almost monthly and understood the cravings that came along with it didn't understand why. It just made talking about periods in the household that much awkward.
"You can if you want. Definitely not going to stop you. But your right about mom. If you want we can take it up to the second kitchen on our floor. I still don't know how that worked." Karla stated.
"But you cant argue with how it worked out. It was like it was made for us." Charlie joked.
"Oh totally. Not going to argue there." Karla stated.
They really used the kitchen on the second floor more the one on the ground floor. The kitchen on the second floor was the one where they kept the majority of their snacks especially when they were doing homework, studying or had friends over. Their father had a mini storage in his room on the third floor. So each floor had a little something to offer and was each their own. Karla didn't know how or why her and Charlie got their own kitchen but they were happy that they did. The one on the first floor was where they did most of the eating.
"So what exactly are we here for?" Charlie asked.
"Well obviously ice cream. Genevieve asked and shes staying till at least Sunday so thought i would get her some of her favorites." Karla replied.
They waited to get the ice cream last. They ended up getting some food that will be good for them like carrots and celery. But they also thought about what snacks they wanted to snack on for the week. If their mom was coming home they wanted to make sure they were getting snacks that would make the nurse in her proud.
"Do you think mom and dad are going to get a divorce?" Charlie asked.
"I don't think so. I mean dad hasn't been talking about her lately. So who knows for sure. If they are they are probably waiting till they are both in person to tell us. It wouldn't be surprising if they were but just how its been the last month its leaning towards that way." Karla stated.
Karla didn't know where that question came from but at the same time she understood where it came from. Martin hadn't really talked about Amelia unless one of the children brought her up. It seemed Amelia was more worried about her work than her family. It was like the signs were there but Karla was hoping for the best but in her gut was expecting the worst. When they got home they did see their moms car in the driveway.
"Hey Charlie and Karla. How are both of you?" Amelia asked.
"Good. We just came back from the store we needed a few snacks." Charlie stated.
Karla noticed that her mom was looking at the bags before smiling and shaking her head. Charlie and Karla went upstairs to put the food in their kitchen. Something didn't seem right because their mother was happy and usually after a multiple weeks away she was never this happy. Karla didn't know if it was because their mom was happy to be home or what. They got downstairs too see their mom getting Chinese from the door.
"Hope you guys don't mind. Did ask your father what you both liked." Amelia stated.
"Are you feeling okay? Wheres our mom who wants us to make healthy choices?" Karla asked.
"You both are old enough to know when to eat healthy things. Plus it is one night. Like when was the last time we ate out together or ordered take out?" Amelia questioned.
Karla could think of the last time they ate out. It was about a week after their father started working from home. But of course she didn't want to upset Amelia so she just kept it to herself. It was the first time in a month that she had seen her mother so he obviously didn't want to upset her. They had caught up before Amelia turned to Karla.
"Karla, your father tells me you met a boy." Amelia stated.
"Can we not talk about it? Things are rocky between us right now." Karla told them.
It was true. Things were rocky but she didn't want to tell her parents there and she didn't want to relive the whole story again. It has hard enough to be living it currently but it would just break her heart more if she had to catch her mother up on what had happened. She hadn't really told Martin what was going on even though they had met once. There were just things that she needed to figure out before she confined in someone other than her sister and friends. Genevieve knocked on the door before Karla answered it. She smiled before hugging Karla.
"Hi Mrs Davis." Genevieve spoke.
"Hello Genevieve. Martin told me you would be stopping by there's food for you on the counter." Amelia stated.
Genevieve grabbed her food before sitting next to Karla. They had enjoyed their meal talking and catching up. Karla saw the look that Genevieve was giving her and knew that she was in for a talk of some sort later. It didn't help when she didn't know what it was they were going to talk about. So after dinner when Karla was getting ready for bed Genevieve came into the room.
"Talk. You've been weird all day. Even Mary and Katy have noticed. Surprised they didn't confront you today at school." Genevieve stated.
"I'm moving on. If John wants to act like i don't exist then why should i wait around for him to be ready to talk. When hes going to be ready were probably going to be graduating. I cant wait that long. So whatever he is hes keeping from me, he can keep it." Karla stated.
This sounded like the Karla that Genevieve was waiting for to return. It might still take awhile for Karla to fully return to who she was before John but she will get there. They both knew that she will eventually get there. Karla also knew that she would have to ignore the connection that she felt when she was around John because it always seemed to be going haywire when they were around each other. At the treeline, John and Pandora were looking upward towards the house.
"So you're ignoring her because she told you about Rune?" Pandora asked.
"Apparently. I just didn't want her to get any closer for her to find out he had a reason for disappearing in the 1470s." John replied.
"If you continue to ignore her, you both will be heartbroken. Don't think you will make it another 300 years." Pandora stated.
"Do you have a better idea? I want to tell her i just don't know how without everyone getting mad at me. I don't want to take her away from her family." John stated.
"That's something she has to decide. If you tell her you can both come up with a plan that works for the both of you. Its killing you knowing that you cant talk to her. I can see it in your face. That's why you need to talk to her before its too late." Pandora told him.
John knew that Pandora was right. But starting to talk to Karla again raised another fear of getting pressured to talk about Rune when he didn't know how to answer any of her questions. If he was going to talk to her again he had to be 1000 percent sure that he wanted and needed Karla in his life. It would take some time to be sure. John wanted to make sure that he wouldn't be heartbroken again. Which he don't think he would be if Karla was what everyone was saying. He had to talk to Karla and try harder not to be a horrible person to her this time. But would he be willing to change and give Karla what she needed from him? There was only one way to find out. And John had to take that first step in trying to get Karla back. For good this time.
