GRIFFIN—
"But why," the beautiful man whispered, his hand reaching in to caress my cheek as we lay, wrapped together as much as we were able with the thick bars between us. "C'mon, you have to tell me. Why do you call me angel? Not that I don't like it, but... I mean, there has to be a reason."
My cum on his skin had my beast rearing up with pleasure, his own scent coating my skin making me feel as if I belonged to him as much as he did to me, even if I couldn't smell it myself. Others could, and that was what truly mattered. He was mine, yes, but I was his too. I was his to do with as he pleased, no matter what my little, gorgeous mate wanted or needed. I would be his for as long as I possibly could.
"I don't know if you remember the first time we met," I began, my cheeks heating with a horribly embarrassing blush.
"I remember. You were kind of a jerk, to be completely honest with you," River said with a smirk, and I snorted out a laugh and shook my head. I reached my hands through the bars and clutched his, my fingers tight against his, nearly crushing the thin digits in my desire to hold him near. Gods, what I wouldn't give to rip through the bars and have my mate, fully and completely. With nothing, nothing, between us.
"No. Well, yes, that was when we met, but that wasn't the first time we saw each other. Do you remember? Do you remember saving me, angel?"
River's eyes met mine as he bit his lip and nodded, just once, hesitantly. "I didn't think you remembered that," he whispered. "We didn't think you would survive. Sami really did a number on you."
"The little beast was relentless and his wee fangs were surprisingly sharp, yes," I grumbled, much to River's obvious amusement. "But at that moment, when I first saw you, the sun at your back, the way you looked down at... I thought the gods had sent an angel to usher me into the underworld. I thought you were an angel. And you were— just not an angel of death. You saved me, my beautiful angel. You saved me, and that... that's why I call you my angel. Because for the rest of my life, I'll owe that life to you."
River sighed happily, bringing my fingers up to his lips to press a gentle kiss to them, then setting them under his head, using my hands as a pillow.
"I like that story. I like being your angel."
I snorted a laugh as I pressed my legs up against his, refusing to flinch though a bar dug into my sensitive, post-orgasmic prick.
"I like you being mine," I whispered back.
Now, my angel lay dying mere feet from me, and I was helpless— godsdamn helpless— to do anything for him.
"Please!" I screamed out of the bars, pleading with anyone, any human, anything inhuman, gods I'd settle for a damn demon at this point. I'd sell my soul for him, and I could only listen in as he slowly faded into death. "Please, you have to help him! He's fucking dying! Please!"
After River's collapse in my arms, Gorge, the innkeeper, had led us to a healer's home that was practically overrun by the chaos the pirates had left in their wake. Between the two of us, we managed to shove our way through the many injured bodies to get to the healer, a young man who looked terrified, frenzied, and nearly glassy with exhaustion.
"Ketyo," Gorge called out, and the young man glanced up, his eyes filling with tears as he dropped himself into Gorge's arms. The innkeeper held the young man for just a moment, long enough for me to gauge that the relationship between the two was romantic, new, and yet strong and passionate, before pushing the healer back and glancing back at me and River. I held my limp mate in my arms, my limbs trembling with exertion and terror.
