Crossville, Tennessee is about as small as it gets. Some call this place paradise others call it hell.

If it's not the heat and humid weather pissing people off, it's the old man that's been working at the same gas station up the street since I was two. He's not quite all there anymore, but you can't blame him. He's getting old. It's not his fault he tried to charge me twenty dollars for a snicker bar the other day after work. But that's how it is around here.

There are two outcomes when you grow up in a small town like this. You either turn eighteen, leave the minute the clock strikes midnight, and never look back. Or you stay here and end up like the grouchy old man who refused to give me a snicker bar without handing him a twenty-dollar bill.

I'm nineteen now, almost twenty, living at home with my dad and working with him at his car shop. I also work at the record store on weekends, but that's only because Elliot's mom works there. My plan, however, was to leave last year on my birthday. I even thought about going to college. All I really wanted to do was travel the country though.

Yes, it's cliche to say, but I've always been in love with the idea of hopping in a van with the love of my life and driving around with no specific destination. I want to see the mountains. I want to see oceans. I want to see it all. I wanted to. But after suddenly losing my mom last summer all of my plans changed.

It's crazy how one of the best days of your life could turn into the worst in a span of a few hours.

My dad's convinced she's gone forever, but they have yet to find her. I know she's still out there. I'm not giving up on her. So now I'm stuck here looking and waiting for her to come home. But unfortunately, as I said before, there's no escaping Crossville. If you're stuck then you're stuck for good.

Elliot was one of the lucky ones. He got out of here as soon as he could. He did the opposite of what I did and he went to college. He's currently attending the University of California and I'm really proud of him. Long-distance sucks, I won't lie, but I get to see him on holidays.

Dean's still not too happy about our relationship and he was glad to see him go, but we're still together and happy so that's all that matters.

I am jealous though, I won't lie. He gets to have the time of his life out there in the real world while I'm stuck here fixing up cars and selling cheap records to the same three people that come to the shop. We're a little town here so everyone knows each other. You grow up, go to school with the same people, work with the same people, and then die with the same people. Only a few ever get out. A lot of people however choose to stay.
