Chapter Nine
ᴛʜᴇᴏᴅɪɴIt was easy getting past the security.
The warehouse was small, and mainly underground. Lead lined the walls, an effective mute for magic. The only spell River could sense was the cloaking spell she had siphoned on the way in.
Easy.
She found her brother chained to a wall, hands above his head. His hair hadn't grown, and his skin was a dark grey, worse than a dead vampire.
It'd been nearly four years since she saw him and he looked the exact same. The same t-shirt from the 90's that he refused to take off, his favorite pair of boots.
She used her magic on the chains, catching his body before he hit the ground. Heavy. Just as he'd always been. She had to use her magic to help carry him out.

It wasn't until they had reached the safe house that Elijah began questioning him on River. At least he had the decency to wait until Klaus saw Hope.
"Freya said there was someone with you. Who was it?"
"I don't know. She rarely talked and did—"
Elijah interrupted before Klaus could continue his lie. "Don't. I heard your conversation."
Klaus sighed as he poured a drink. The look in his brother's eyes was all too familiar, an it irked Klaus how easily Elijah could read him.
"She's just a powerful witch that Marcel wanted to detain. Great company for four years," Klaus said.
Elijah nodded with a hum, "You wouldn't have lied if it was that simple. What else?"
Klaus glared, hoping to stop Elijah's questioning but the elder brother held his ground, a brief look of amusement on his face. "I don't think she'd appreciate me telling you this."
Truth is, he hadn't really discussed with River how much he could tell people. He knew she was still trying to be off the radar with how she promised to wipe the minds of Marcel and his men of her presence. Certainly telling Elijah too much was just a way to guarantee both of their minds being wiped. Elijah's for knowing and Klaus' for misplace trust.
Keeping his mouth shut sounded like a better idea. "Besides, it's no business of yours," Klaus added, brushing past Elijah on the way out the room.
