Chapter Nineteen
ʀᴇᴠᴇʟᴀᴛɪᴏɴs

𝑅𝐼𝑉𝐸𝑅

Klaus stares at me, the only sign of life coming from him is the rise and fall of his chest, and it makes me uneasy.

"You said that you and Theodin were the first. The only two fabrikators." He narrows his eyes at me as if trying to discern every word I say. Like he doesn't trust my words are the truth anymore.

Well, why would he? All I've done is lie lately.

"And if you tell me once more that you don't want to talk about it, so help me..." He steps away from me and I have to pretend I'm not hurt by the gesture. I deserve it.

"I lied, Klaus," I say slowly. "I've been lying about a couple of things of late."

His eyebrows go up, "And this is where you come clean, I hope. I like you, River, but I despise liars." His eyes are darker now than when he was feeding me pie, the clear blue turned to a murky teal.

Our first real argument. I know I started it, but I don't like this one bit. He's giving me a look I never thought I'd see from him and it makes my stomach sink.

"Klaus, you have to understand. Keeping to myself is what's kept me alive for eight centuries. And you're Klaus Mikaelson, the great evil."

He eyes me warily like he's bracing himself for the impact of my words. "What's that supposed to mean?"

I furrow my brows. Doesn't he get it? "You realize I've heard stories about you since I was born. All the witches talked about were these abominations that feasted on human blood. The worst of them all, half vampire, half beast, who didn't know the definition of the word mercy." He looks baffled at the words coming out of my mouth. "You don't have the most reliable reputation."

"So this is my fault now. I'm an abomination, that's why I deserve to be lied to?"

I shake my head. "When they started calling me an abomination too, it ceased to have an impact."

"Then why won't you trust me, River." He's exasperated.

"Because you're you, Klaus. I've got everyone in my ear telling me not to. It's been like that for centuries. And I learned a lesson with Luca... it's not easy."

"And Luca. You're going to tell me about him. Now. You've lost the right to keep secrets since you seem to have a hard time discerning what is important. Luka being a fabrikator was important in case that wasn't clear."
