Carter's POV
It was still raining when I got to Utah. I fell like that's all that ever happens anymore. Rains.
"Carter!" I heard a voice yell. I looked up from my phone and saw my cousin waving her hand franticly. "Oh I'm so glad you're safe!"
"Can we just go?" I asked avoiding the hug. She nodded and guided me towards her car. The whole car ride home, it was quite. The distance of the radio played music making things a little less awkward. A little while later, we were at the bus station next to the town Sam's Club. "Why are we here?"
"We need to take the bus to my house. I have been in this car to long." She pulled my hand to one of the many buses. We sat in the back as we watied for it to move. Once it did, things became more normal. I didn't talk to her. Sitting on the opposite side of her. Her blue eyes burned into mine as she stared.
About 15 minutes later, we got off and walked into a blue house. It was an ordinary one. Also the one I would come over to when I was younger. Courtney flicked the lights on into her small house and entered.
"Things aren't any different Carter. I'm still your cousin," She said breaking the silence as we entered her kitchen.
"Thing is Courtney, you lied. You knew this whole time and didn't tell me. If you would have told me, I woudldn't have almost died. I would have gone with you to Italy. I would have let you adopt me. But no. You didn't. And I had a gun placed to my head," I yelled back.
"Carter, I couldn't tell you. If I did, they would have killed my family. They were already mad I was talking to you."
"Who's is THEY!? I don't know who THEY are! That's all I hear!" I yelled back. She winced at my temper but spoke as soon as I cooled off a bit.
"THEY are working for your real father. They were hired to look for you. You father is looking for you," she explained.
"I know that much," I sighed.
"You don't know this. He didn't kill your mother. For some odd reason, he wants her dead and doesn't want you to meet her." Her curly hair fell freely in front of her face.
"Do you know her?" I asked quietly.
"I do. But that was a long time ago. Before you were four I think. Haven't heard from her since." I nodded as I waited for my cousin to continue. "He thought he killed her the night you were sent to live with the Harper's. They were hired by your father to keep you there till he found your mother. But the state got involved because of the beatings, they had to remove you from the home. After that, your father lost track of you. Couldn't find you till you contacted me around the age of 13 by phone. He knew you would call the only person left from your birth cousin. So he tracked that. He called your mothers sister, Anne, and had her adopt you. She didn't know what she was getting into."
"So he contacted Anne? And Anne is my mothers sister?" I asked trying to catch up with what was going on.
"Yes. She thought your mother was dead as well. Still does. They only people who really know she is alive is me, you, your father, Daniel, and.." She paused, hesitating to go on. "And.."
"And who Courtney? We haven't got time to waste!"
"And Harry knows. He knows your father. He knows what's somewhat going on. He isn't on his side but is ordered to keep it a secret. I'm sorry Carter. We didn't want you to find out this way." Courtney came and set next to me on the long floral couch. She soothingly rubbed my back as I took everything in. So everyone knew and no one told me. "We couldn't tell you. The more you came to becoming curious about your birth family, the more he wanted to find you."
