Sasuke paused in perplexity. Was his eyes deceiving him? Sakura bore the Sharingan on her right eye. Another pattern designed rather than the three tomoes swirling around as blood streaked down.
How is this possible?, he thought.
"Sakura, why do you have the Sharingan?" he asked only to watch the kunoichi open her mouth. A sign that she too was shocked with his question.
Sakura reached for her eye only to meet the blood that rested on her cheek. She stared at her crimson finger before looking back at the younger Uchiha then at the lifeless body of the older one on her lap.
Losing her mind, she called out to Itachi.
"Oi." Sakura nudged him. "You, bastard! Wake up!"
"Oi, Itachi!" she called again. "Itachi-kun, please wake up."
She looked at his peaceful face, momentarily forgetting the bad news that was displayed in her eyes.
"Itachi-kun, you have to wake up! I need answers! What did you do to me?!" she cried.
Sasuke looked at her in pity. He never thought that Sakura would react this way towards her brother. She was more in pain than him and yet he could only watch her.
Sakura kept nudging Itachi's lifeless body until Sasuke reached for her hands and held it.
"Sakura, that's enough." his tone laced with concern and empathy.
The sudden touch caused her to flinch and snap his hand away as she stared at him. Words stuck on her throat, unable to escape as she wanted to tell him to not touch her, but her memory of Sasuke during their gennin days told her not to. She remembered he was an ally, a friend, a family. She no longer has reasons to remain hostile towards him.
"I'm sorry." Sasuke said upon noticing her flinch. He figured that the kunoichi must be uncomfortable knowing that she wasn't familiar with him and was only in the company of his brother for three years.
Two figures arrived behind them, exhausted as they ran and hastily looked for the ruined Uchiha hideout.
"Sakura-chan." Naruto called breathlessly. He recalled what he saw in her eyes as she sped away from them.
"Can you look at me, Sakura-chan?" Naruto was behind her as he bent down to her level. He needs to confirm what he saw.
Sakura slowly looked back at him and there he saw the truth. The truth where her eye glowed in crimson red with a pattern that could only be acknowledged as the Mangekyo Sharingan.
"I didn't know." she suddenly said. She felt like Naruto was going to ask the same question that Sasuke did. Upon recognizing the caring eyes of the jinchuriki, she felt the need to assure him that she too didn't know why.
Kakashi watched from behind the three with his eyes widened. So this is why she was able to deflect Sasuke's Sharingan but how was it possible that she has the Sharingan while her eyes remained its forest hue? For sure it wasn't done through implant, so how? What trick did the older Uchiha use and why did he gave it to her?
His thoughts were interrupted when his gaze rested to him. He was a smart and intelligent kid. Someone who was far more intellectual than anyone his age. He remembers him as his underclassmen when he was in ANBU. The kid was a true prodigy but now, here he is—dead.
"We have to go back." Kakashi spoke after some silence.
"C-can... we bring h-him too?" Sakura asked pertaining to Itachi, unable to face her sensei.
"Of course." Kakashi took a scroll from one of the pockets of his vest and in it, revealed a cylinder container that could fit a body.
"We have to put him here. Would you like to do it, Sakura?" Kakashi asked, his fatherly tone echoed through her ears. She missed that.
