Chapter Four
“You’re leaving? What do you mean you’re leaving?” Bri’s voice yelled down the phone to me.
“Exactly that, Brianna. I think I pushed my dad too far this time.” I was sprawled out over my bed in my ‘lazy day’ Marvel Avengers top and plain black pyjama shorts, the phone clamped between my shoulder and ear. I watched as my hands fidgeted and slowly conjured up a ball of burning fire, purple in colour. I twisted my hands around, manipulating the form and dimensions of the fire.
“But you can’t just leave! I won’t allow it! I’ll lock you up in my room and hide you away so-“
“Bri, Bri! Chill, I’m sure it’ll only be for a couple of weeks.” Whilst on the ride with Ignus I had thought about my predicament and a plan to get out of it.
“What? Blaze, I don’t think you understand! He’s sending you to a school far away, that probably has no cell service so we won’t be able to talk and you’ll miss your senior year here and the prom and then you’ll fall into despair and turn crazy and…”
“Deep breaths, Brianna, take deep breaths.” I counselled sarcastically.
“Who’s going to be my friend here though?” I heard her shaky whisper down the line. I sat up and made the fire in between my hands disappear.
“What are you talking about Bri? Everyone at school loves you!”
I heard her snort, “No, they only love the Princess’ best friend. They’re all just scared of you so they settle with the next best thing. You’re my only true friend Blaze. My best friend and I,” I could hear the tears and hoarseness in her, “I don’t know what to do without you.” My heart broke hearing my best friend so sad and hopeless.
“Brianna, who’s made you think this?”
“It doesn’t matter, I mean it’s true!”
“It’s not! Listen to me Bri, you are beautiful, kind and lovely! You’re generous, forgiving and everyone absolutely adores you. Forget whoever told you that, they’re probably just jealous.”
It was quiet for a moment before she blew out a breath, “It was Aaron.”
“Aaron? Oh come on Bri, you should know better than to believe him!”
“Yeah I know.” She still didn’t sound completely convinced.
“Honestly, sometimes I’m envious of you! How it’s so easy for you to fit in and make friends and get guys to fall in love with you! Sometimes I wish I was you and not this freak that no one likes! You are amazing Bri and it doesn’t matter whether I’m at school with you or on the other side of the planet because I will always be there for you no matter what!” I ended my speech panting, sincerity making my voice crack.
“Thanks Blaze, I actually really needed that.” I smiled. I know that Brianna’s been dealing with a lot of self-esteem issues over the years but I would always be there to help her through it.
“Now, do you want me to go beat Aaron up? Again? Because since I’m moving schools anyway I might as well.” I made my voice light and teasing but I was deadly serious.
She laughed slightly and I can imagine her twirling her hair around her fingers, sitting by the window staring out at the sky, “No, he’s not worth it.”
“Well okay if you say so…” I grumbled to myself.
“I do!” it was silent between us for a moment before she changed the subject, “So you’re Dad’s really making you move schools?”
“Yeah, unfortunately. How am I going to survive?” I sighed.
“Fabulously! Because I’m gonna help you!”
“Uh Bri you really don’t have to do that-“
“First order of business – clothes!” I groaned at the thought of being subjected to this torture, “Do you have any dresses? Oh, what about that pink one I got for your birthday?”
It was going to be a long night.
