"Will you let me take care of you, babe?" I looked into her eyes as I asked the question. It was the second time I was asking her to be my old lady. What would I do if she said no again?
"What happened between you and my sister?"
That definitely wasn't the reaction I was expecting. A no? Maybe. But not that question. Barbara had told me how she would react if she ever found out. But I couldn't lie to her. Not if I wanted her to be my old lady. "We didn't sleep together," I said.
"But everyone thinks you did. All the guys. They all tease you since she came out after it."
"There was no it. I knew she was gay long before anybody else did. Not you obviously, but anybody else in the club."
"How?" She asked with her brows furrowed.
"I was out on a ride. I ended up in Rodeo City. They've got this Irish pub. It's legit Irish food and it reminds me of my mom's cooking. So I go up there sometimes. There's a gay bar across the street. I saw your sister coming out of it with a girl in her arms. They were making out while they stumbled drunkinly. She saw me and panicked."
"She thought that she would never be allowed back inside the club if anyone ever found out."
He nodded. "But now you all know we're not like that."
They weren't, but a lot of clubs still were. And a lot of these guys came from home lives where their families were racist, homophobic, transphobic, all the horrible fucking phobics that no person has the right to be.
"I chased her when she saw me and was able to calm her down. Ever since that we've had this friendship. Because we were always alone together and hanging out, everyone assumed we were sleeping together. We weren't, but she begged me not to deny it so that nobody caught on that she actually had a girlfriend. By the time she finally had enough courage to come out, after I'd assured her she would still be welcome at the club, it was too late. None of the guys believed I'd be spending so much time with her if we weren't actually having sex. And it doesn't matter to me, let them think what they want. I didn't sleep with her and I sure as hell didn't turn her lesbian. As if that was even possible," he scoffed. "She tried setting the record straight. Truthfully, I don't know if the guys actually believe it or not or if they just like giving me shit about it. Could go either way."
"So you guys were just friends?"
"Yes."
"Did she know that you wanted me?"
"Yes," I admitted. I made up my mind that I wasn't going to lie to her. She looked at me. She was trying to decide if I was telling the truth or not. I was.
"Did she make you fall for me?"
"How?" I asked.
"I don't know. I'm just trying to figure out how this happened."
"I can't explain it. All I know is I want you. You're an amazing woman, Brenda. You take care of everyone around you, except you. Let me be the one to do that, let me be the one to take care of you."
"Fuck, she told you didn't she?" Her demeanour changed instantly. She'd gone from thoughtful, quietly asking questions to angry in a matter of seconds. I knew what she was asking. I wanted to play dumb. She was asking if I knew about her mom. "That's all this is about," she seethed.
She was so pissed. I'd ruined it before it even started.
"You pity me." Fat tears rolled down her face. She looked so tired. She couldn't have slept more than a few hours last night. I hadn't either, but I would have the ability to nap later. I always did. She wouldn't. She was too busy taking care of her mom and the club to take a nap.
