May 28th 2010 New Mexico, Earth
Anxiously, my fingers drum against the metal table my arms are resting on. The door in front of me opens and a woman in a navy dress walks in. She takes a seat on the rusted metal chair opposite me and locks eyes with me. Her black hair is pulled back into a painfully tight-looking bun, and grey bags have formed beneath her dull brown eyes.
"Name?", she asks in a monotone voice.
"Excuse me?"
"Name.", she repeats impatiently.
"Astrid."
"Yeah, funny.", she says sarcastically, "Real name?"
"I'm afraid I don't understand."
"Okay, we're not getting anywhere here.", she sighs, "Last name?"
"I do not have one."
"Everyone has a last name. Stop bullshitting me."
"Well, you see, I was...", I glance around nervously before leaning in and dropping my voice to a whisper, "I was born out of wedlock.", my voice picks back up to its normal volume, "It is a shame upon my family's name, I know. But the Allfather has forgiven us."
"I just need a name.", she states blankly.
I close my eyes and search for Thor; he's close to me, enough so I can see him, but growing further away. I attempt to cast my mind to him, just as Heimdall has taught me. My breathing slows to a steady rhythm, as my chest rises and falls slowly.
Then, the blackness morphs to a vision of Thor running out from the building we're confined to. Glancing around, he hurries away, as deathly metal traps speed towards him. He keeps running, in the direction of the edge of the town and back to the desert where the Bifrost landed us.
My eyes snap back open, bringing me to my present location, as the metal door slams shut. Looking around the room, I see that the woman who was questioning me has disappeared. Alone in the room, I run my hands through my now matted golden hair.
The wall before me has a large mirror covering a portion of it. Looking at my reflection is a sorry sight; my hair is knotted and greasy, whilst an itchy blue gown hangs off my slim frame. Not quite like the Asgardian royalty I usually appear like.
Behind the mirror, I can sense three presences, watching, waiting.
I have to get out of here.
The door creaks open again, the woman in the blue dress walking back in, "Awake again, are we?", she asks. I don't reply, just narrow my eyes at her, "Look, I'm not here to start an argument with you. I just need a name and ID so that I can check your insurance and bill you.". No reply. "Nothing? Okay."
"Astrid!", a voice, Thor's voice, echoes through my mind. "Astrid!", he yells again. I close my eyes and cast my mind to where he is.
"...And you're back to sleep.", I hear the woman in the blue dress sigh.
"I'm back where the Bifrost cast us, come here. You must escape that hellish prison before they torture you in unimaginable ways."
My eyes snap open again and lock with the woman in the blue dress. Then, in a flash of bright blue light, I disappear, leaving the woman in utter confusion. She falls backward on her chair, heart pounding in her chest.
Her head snaps around to the one-way glass, "Did- Uh- What? Did anybody else see that?"
Back in the middle of the desert, Astrid appears behind Thor, "I'm here. Don't worry."
He spins around, a slight smile forming upon his face when he sees her, "Astrid.", he breathes out. He walks over and takes her hand in his, looking around hurriedly, "Come, we must find Mjolnir."
"Could you not just summon it to your hand?", I ask.
"I've tried, but she isn't coming to me. She must have come through the Bifrost though.". He falls to his knees on the floor and grasps at the sand aimlessly.
A metal chariot pulls up behind us, sand flying up from the wheels as they skid to a holt. The three people who first found us run out of the chariot and toward us. I crouch down next to Thor, rubbing his back soothingly.
The three Midgardians pick us up one on me, and the two women taking Thor, "Come on, let's get you two somewhere safe.", one of the women says.
Without putting up a fight, we're both dragged to the metal chariot and locked in the back. He's sat next to me and I rest my head on his shoulder, whilst he rests his cheek against the top of my head.
"I heard you two were beating people up at the hospital.", the woman with brown hair laughs.
The woman with blonde hair hits her arm lightly, "Darcy, don't be rude! We already hit them with a car!"
"Well, they're weird... and cool. I want to know about them.", the dark-haired girl, Darcy, says, leaning resting her chin in her hand and leaning forward.
I lock eyes with her, glaring daggers, which makes her look away awkwardly. The carriage rattles through the desert with us inside of it, as the three Midgardians keep anxiously glancing back at us, whilst we just sit there.
We are never getting back to Asgard.
