Once King was thoroughly stretched out and relieved, they got back in the car and continued driving. King climbed in the front seat when Peter tried to recline it again and just laid down on his chest. They laughed about it but Peter said it was okay
Eventually the sky grew dark and Peter fell asleep in the seat next to her. She listened to the soft music coming from Peter's phone and the hum of the air conditioning as it kept the car a nice 67 degrees. It started to rain after the sun had completely set and the sound of rain on the metal roof was mesmerizing. She listened to the sounds of the car for what felt like hours, the air conditioning, the music, the rain, Peter and King's steady breathing. It was peaceful, something she had felt in a long time, at least, not like this. She looked over at Peter and remembered the feeling she got when she looked in his dark eyes, she felt safe.
That safety was short lived. Peter suddenly sat up and tried to grab the steering wheel. "What are you-" She didn't have the chance to finish her question because someone rear ended them at forty miles an hour.
She heard herself scream but didn't register doing it. King made a strange noise, something between a bark and a whimper while Peter slapped something on his wrists.
Peter suddenly forgot about his secret identity and was only concerned with Sage and King's safety. He opened his door and wrapped an arm around King, before he grabbed Sage's arm and shot a web out his door. It attached itself to a telephone pole and Peter used it to pull the three of them from the car that was now spinning out of control. Peter slung another web between two telephone poles to catch them.
They all landed safely on the web. Peter slowly lowered the three of them to the ground. Sage collapsed into the fetal position as soon as her feet touched the ground. Her eyes were shut tightly and King, being her service dog, laid down beside her and started licking her face. He was trying to force his head under her arm. Peter knelt beside her and put a hand on her arm, "Sage?"
King pawed at his hand as if to say, 'Not now bug boy.'
Sage wrapped her arms around King and held him for a few moments before opening her eyes.
Peter waited for her breathing pattern to return to normal before saying, "Sage?" She looked up at him and sat up only to fall into his arms. "I think you hit your head when I pulled us out of the car." Peter held her and rested his chin on her head. "I'm sorry."
"You say that a lot." Sage said, finally speaking.
"I do?" Peter asked with a small giggle.
"Mhm," Sage said. "What are you sorry for this time?"
"For most likely giving you a concussion." He brushed the hair out of her face.
"You mean for saving our lives?" Sage said, petting King who kept his head on her lap.
"Well that's not exactly what I meant." Peter giggled. Sage sat up and turned to look at him. "Hey, be careful." he said, still not letting go of her.
She grabbed his arm, "Thank you."
Peter nodded, "Let's go find the car. We can spend the night it in and hopefully you'll feel better in the morning."
Sage tried to stand up but quickly faltered and grabbed Peter's shoulders. "Whoa," he said. "I got you."
Peter was very strong and picking up Sage was easy for him. He put her arms around his neck and scooped her up, one arm under her knees and the other cradling her back. The car had hydroplaned and slid into the borrow pit between the two highway lanes. King followed Sage and Peter to the car.
Peter was a little sad to see the beautiful car damaged but he was grateful that they were safe.
He set Sage down momentarily to open the door but he never let go of her. He figured that the passenger side would have more room than the driver's side so he laid her in that seat and reclined it all the way. He opened the door for King who climbed in and rested his head on Sage's reclined seat. Then he went to the driver's side. He climbed in and shut the door before covering Sage with the blanket he had been using when the car crashed. "What about you?" she asked.
"Oh, I'll be okay." he said.
Sage was already starting to fall asleep, or lose consciousness, Peter couldn't tell. "So," Sage said, her voice sleepy. "Spiderman?"
Peter gave a small smile, "Yeah, Spiderman."
Sage turned to him and smiled, "Not bad Spiderman."
