the day before the start of senior year:

melina started her day bright and early at 6am, just like she had for the past 2 weeks. she was adjusting herself to this sleep schedule so the first day would be the even the slightest bit easier.
this morning she felt exceptionally drawn to the snooze button, but instead of letting herself sleep a few more minutes before starting her very uneventful morning, she got up and made herself some iced coffee.
while sipping her coffee and pacing around her kitchen melina noticed a note from her mom. looks like she came home for a brief moment last night.

"back from mexico and off to greece! saw on the calender that your first day of junior year is tomorrow! good luck not that you need it, i never have to worry about you. miss you mija. i hope you enjoy this little souvenir!"

"junior year huh..." melina mumbled to herself.
next to the note was an envelope of money and a small bag with a necklace inside it. she admired it for a moment.

she appreciated it of course; but just like every other gift it was flashy and melina never liked showing off

she appreciated it of course; but just like every other gift it was flashy and melina never liked showing off. therefore she put the necklace back in the bag along with the note and walked back up to her room. the side table closest to the door was flooding with gifts from her mom. by far the messiest part of her room or house even. she carefully placed the bag next to all the others and sat on her bed glaring at the pile in slight melancholy.
she quickly pulled herself together and decided to get dressed and run some errands. she got her keys and drove off to target. maybe she was gonna get some extra school supplies or groceries for tonight's dinner. the only thing she was sure of in the moment was that she needed a distraction.

meanwhile

marcy woke up immediately dreading what was to come in 24 hours. senior year was such a scary concept to her. it felt as if a few weeks ago her and her 3 bestfriends were preparing to start their first year of highschool.
after endlessly scrolling on her phone, she dragged herself out of bed. as she was throwing her messy curls into a bun she heard her stomach beg to be fed. she hurried downstairs and was greeted by her dad.
"good afternoon sleepyhead!" he said sarcastically.
afternoon? marcy thought. she checked her phone. 12:46. oh. she brushed it off and headed into the kitchen to make herself some cereal. she was still basically half asleep so she ended up putting way more milk than needed. she carefully held the bowl with two hands as she walked back to her room.
turning on her computer opened up to the movie she fell asleep to last night. with her bowl in one hand she reached for the space bar. she lightly smiled as it played Howl's Moving Castle. she had watched this movie a countless amount of times already but it never got old.

credits rolled and marcy's phone started to buzz. FaceTime Video: melina <3. she picked it up.
"hey i'm like 20 away" melina said almost too calmly while at a red light.
"what do you mean" marcy replied confused.
"i mean i'm picking you up and we're doing something"
      "where are we going"
"girl i don't know somewhere, nowhere either way i'm like 15 minutes away so get ready chop chop" melina rambled before hanging up. marcy groaned and got dressed. she waited in her living room. scrolling through tiktok for an hour before she heard a knock on her door. as you can see melina isn't as good with time managment as she'd like to be.
"MOM, DAD, IM GOING OUT WITH MELINA!!" she yelled before opening the door to see a worn out melina waiting at her doorstep.
    "melina are you okay?"
"yes i'm fine, but you're driving" marcy rolled her eyes and took melina's keys from her hand.

meanwhile (pt.2)

tai tossed and turned in her bed for what felt like hours. the fact that she had school tomorrow didn't even grace her mind. she sat up and an abrupt ache rushed to her head. she slowly walked over to her messy drawer and downed some ibuprofen. as she walked out of her room she was met with toby reading a book at their kitchen table.
"you look fucked tai" he said in disbelief.
"wow thanks asshole that's a great way to speak to a woman"
"you're not a woman your my sister now go eat something. i think i left you pancakes in the fridge." tai scoffed and walked over to the fridge. she never showed it but tai was grateful that she had her twin brother. when they spoke they always clashed but his acts of trying to keep her in one piece made up for it. she shoved the cold, plain pancakes into her mouth and grabbed her backpack.
"thanks toby" she said while putting on her shoes and entering the garage. she grabbed a random sweater that was laying on one of the bean bags and put it on. she examined the sweater for a moment realizing that it definitely wasn't hers. melina's maybe? she shrugged it off and just like that she was on her board, heading to the skatepark.

after an hour or so of skating tai spots ricky alverez heading towards her.
"ALVEREZ!" she said while skating towards him with her arms open. ricky was amongst the few men tai didn't completely despise. besides melina and marcy, he was one of her bestfriends.
"what the fuck where have you been all summer!" ricky said while dapping up tai. she'd been with marcy and melina all summer so she didn't have as much time to come down to the park.
"i don't know blackout drunk for the most part" she said lightly laughing. her phone rang. FaceTime Video: morales!!!  She picked it up to see both of her bestfriends on screen.
"TAI WHERE ARE YOU" melina yelled as if the phone wasn't inches away from her.
    "skatepark why what's up"
"we're coming" marcy said much softer with a giggle.
"who's that" ricky said while pointing at marcy tai's phone. tai hung up on marcy and melina to look at him with a confused expression.
"you've gone to school with us for 4 years and you don't know marceline?" tai said somewhat aggressively. after examining ricky's expression a little longer it clicked.
"oh my god YOU THINK MARCY'S CUTE HUH" she said loudly. ricky covered tai's mouth worried that people would hear.
"shut up tai oh my god the whole town can hear you"
"that's how i like it." tai stated light heartedly before seeing her friends pull up to the skate park.
"looks like you gotta go, see you tomorrow tai" ricky said before skating down the bowl. that's when she remembered.

they had school tomorrow.
