Chapter 18

"What?" Raf stuttered, much like everyone in the room. Roi turned cold beside him.

"It was the only way to make sure you lived," A tear ran across Blynn's cheek. "And I was the only one who could do that."

"That's why he came to you," Keenan whispered, the puzzle pieces slowly falling together in his head.

"Yeah," Blynn sighed shakily.

"How?" Roi suddenly shouted. "How do you erase someone's existence?"

"I'm a Badeaux, - Blynn turned to him, - that's how. I come from an ancient tribe of original witches which, among other things, were able to manipulate the order in which events occurred in someone's memories."

"What does that even mean?" Raf questioned her.

"Hmm, think of it this way. When you were born, your parents announced your birth to their kingdom. And so, everyone got to know you existed. Now, what would happen if somehow this announcement was never made?" Blynn explained as clearly as she could. "The people that never met you, wouldn't know about your existence."

"Hmm," Roi hummed. "And what about the people that did meet us?"

"They never did," Blynn shrugged. "Those memories I showed you? They never happened for Gwen and Keenan, for example. They were at the picnic, of course, but, in their memories, you two never made it there."

"And you did that for every encounter?" Raf inquired.

"Yeah," Blynn admitted.

"Then how come I remember them happening?" Raf asked in confusion. "You said you returned my memories. Or did you actually mean you readjusted time?"

"No," Blynn chuckled lightly. "I only returned your memories. When I say I readjusted time, I mean only on people's heads and not the actual events. I'm not that strong and it is deadly to try and mess with the past."

"So, you only changed the timing on their memories?" Roi was even more confused than Raf.

"Yes, that's the short version of it," Blynn confirmed.

"Wow," Roi whispered, not fully sure if it was in amazement or fear.

"But doesn't that kind of mass magic always require a sacrifice?" Gwen asked as she looked at the witch in a totally different light.

"Yes, it can kill the user," Blynn turned her head towards Gwen.

"Then how are you alive?" Gwen inquired.

"Again, I'm a Badeaux. We have a one-time chance at performing this spell en-masse without it killing us," Blynn explained. "It does, however, leave a permanent mark."

"The silver hair," Keenan uttered. He vaguely remembered Blynn telling him that a special spell could turn her hair silver many years ago. But he had assumed the change of color had happened due to age. She was, after all, nearing her 80s even though she looked less than half her real age.

"And pupils. I made up that spell I told you about," Blynn added and Keenan rolled his eyes, unsurprised.

Roi's head shot up to look at his mate. He had managed to ignore her presence till now. It hadn't been easy with his wolf clawing at his mind for him to get closer to her.

"You-," Roi whispered as Sarin's silver pupils fell on him.

"God, no," Blynn said when she noticed the way Roi was looking at his mate. "She hasn't performed the spell. I don't know why her pupil's color changed but it is probably because I was breastfeeding her so she had substances that came from my body on her when I performed the spell. Plus, her hair would've been the first thing to change if she ever had to perform such a spell," Blynn finished, thinking about how once upon a time her hair was the exact color as her daughter's.
