Chapter 37: Percy

Tyson giggled across from me and I smiled. We had been playing Sorry for over half an hour now, and he had just Sorry-ed me. I made a pouty face, which just made him giggle even more.

To my right, I could hear my phone buzz repeatedly and I quickly muttered a quick sorry to Tyson before answering it. He looked at me with wide eyes while I listened to the person talking on the other side. As I grasped the full story, I asked, "are you sure? She wouldn't do that type of stuff, that's not like her."

Calypso sighed and said, "don't you get it?! She's changed, Perce. Get over here please, there's police cars and policemen who keep asking me questions and the loud noise—"

"I'll be right there," I interrupted her and hung up the phone. "Tyson, I'm so sorry buddy..."

"Is she okay?" he whimpered. Gods, he was so sweet. I guess he had grown attached to Calypso, though I hadn't really noticed any interactions between them. I ruffled his hair.

"I think she's a bit shaken up. She doesn't really like big noises and all that..."

"I mean Annabeth. I know you were talking about her," his lip quivered.

"Oh Tyson! I'm sure she's fine, she's just confused. It's going to be okay," I hugged him fiercely. I could already feel the tears burning up behind my eyes for reasons I couldn't fully comprehend.

After a minute, he pulled away. "Go save your princess from her cell," he giggled and winked at me. I blinked back the tears and took in a deep breath before leaving the house.

It was only when I was halfway to the supermarket, running and out of breath, that I realized that he meant Annabeth and not Calypso. I shook my head to myself. Tyson hadn't really taken the news well when I had told him that Annabeth and I had... broken up? We had never really been together. My heart dropped with the realization. Why did I feel such guilt if we had never actually gone out officially?

Thousands of different thoughts ran in my head, jumbling and by the time I was at the market, I was more confused than anything. I saw Calypso, her blonde-brown hair shining, and two policemen towered over her. I could see her fingers running through her hair, one of her anxious habits.

"Sunshine!" I called, using her pet name. I knew I needed to be extra gentle with her.

"Percy," she cried out, her voice near tears.

"Calypso!" I ran over to her and hugged her fiercely. "What happened?" I asked. Her eyes were watery and she moved her gaze to the two policemen. "Can you give us some privacy please? My girlfriend is a little shaken up. Isn't it better for your case if she calms down that way she can tell you the full story?" I asked.

The two policemen huffed but agreed and slowly went to question another witness.

"Come on, let's sit down," I smiled sadly to Calypso, and led her to a small bench on the side of the supermarket.

When she sat down, her breath wavered. "She's fine," she said after a while.

My heart instantly slowed. "Who?" I tried to pretend dumbness.

"You know who. Annybeth," she sighed. She looked up at me with big eyes. "Oh mon dieu Percy! It was horrid!"

"What was?" I asked.

"She... stole," Calypso whispered.

"I know, you told me," I said. "Did you see them?"

"Luke ran off."

"Wait! Where's Beth?" I asked.

"You mean Annybeth?" I realized I had called her by her nickname and blushed fiercely. "They took her to a prison cell. She's going to stay there until her mother picks her up."

"Her MOTHER?" I gasped.

Calypso nodded, confused.

"Where is she, Sunshine?"

"Do you simply not care about me?" she cried out.

"No love, trust me I care more about you. But she's alone and I promise, we can spend tonight together, relaxing, watching movies and forgetting about this, okay? But right now, Annabeth needs me."

"Didn't you guys fight?" Calypso asked bluntly. All of her fear was gone, and she even looked infuriated now.

"Yeah," I looked down, sadly.

Calypso hummed and raised her eyebrows.

"Oh my gods! No! This doesn't mean anything I swear. Please Sunshine?" I quickly kissed her.

She nodded slowly. "Be back soon, please," she whispered.

"I will."

I walked towards the police officers who were going around interviewing all of the people. "Excuse me, sir," I tapped on one of their shoulders.

He turned slowly, his eyes fierce. "What?" he spit out.

I grimaced. "Where is Annabeth?"

"The robber?" he asked.

Robber? What was she considered a criminal!?! "Yeah," I pressed my lips together, fighting back my instinct to roll my eyes.

"We took her out already. She's at the police station, in jail," he smiled.

I looked at his name-tag. Ares. "Thank you Ares for the information," I said as kindly as possible. He nodded.

I sent a quick text to Calypso, explaining to her where I was going. I had decided that telling her face to face would just end up with her being jealous, me feeling guilty and an overall failure in the mission to see Annabeth.

I jogged to the police station, which thankfully was only a couple blocks away. "May I see Annabeth Chase, please?" I asked the woman at the counter when I entered.

"The robber who was just brought in?" she tapped her pen on her chin.

"Yes," I growled. Why did everyone keep calling her that?

"She's out in the first cell to the left," the woman explained. She looked at me carefully. "Normally I would ask for ID, and technically only adults are allowed in the back, but you seem like a good kid so go ahead."

I smiled. "Thank you so much."

"She needs you," she winked and went back to looking at her computer and clicking on the keyboard.

I looked around the hallway as I walked through. It was dark, dull and radiated loneliness. My heart fell for Annabeth. She shouldn't have to be experiencing this alone and betrayed.

I was walking down the hallway when my eyes caught a glimmer of the golden blonde I was so familiar with. I took in a deep breath and knocked on the wall. "Annabeth? Annabeth are you in there?" I said softly.

"Go away," she cried.

"Only if you want me to," I stepped out into the light so she could see me.

"Percy?" she gasped and hiccupped, a combination of sadness and fear and regret that made my heart tear. She shouldn't be feeling so sad. Annabeth didn't deserve this. She deserved the world, with her wit and smile and humor. She deserved someone who cared about her, appreciated her, someone who would do anything to keep her steady when she was feeling wobbly. I could tell she was feeling wobbly right now, but the real question was, who was going to keep her steady?
