Chapter 5: Percy
"She's going to be so mad at me tomorrow," Tyson chuckled.
I looked down at him. "And how do you know that?"
"Because she's my friend." I ruffled his hair. Of course he was friends with her. He was friends with everyone.
"Gosh, Tyson. Was it really that bad?"
He giggled. "Oh, I think it's worse."
"But I apologized."
"Yeah, we'll see," he said, looking off into the distance. He was biting his lower lip, a habit of when he was nervous or thinking hard. The expression in his eyes was not a happy one.
My head began to pound, and I could feel the blood coursing through my veins. Tyson shouldn't be worrying about these things. He was too young. I stopped in front of him and knelt down. "Look, Tyson. I don't want her to bother you. If she annoys you in any way, you tell me and I'll go and talk it out with her, okay?" He nodded quickly but didn't reply.
We walked up the steps to our house. I patted my back pocket for keys and quickly fished them out. As soon as he entered, Tyson ran to mom, who was taking the cookies out of the oven.
"Percy hit a girl!" he shouted and kicked off his shoes. My mother gasped.
I groaned. Really Tyson? I looked at him in panic. My eyes flickered to my mom, who was currently ignoring me. He smirked at me. I growled. If he made the wrong impression... I didn't know what would happen, but it sure wouldn't be any fun.
"Really, Tyson? Tell me more," my mother asked. She didn't even look up. She was ignoring me.
He set down his lunch bag on the counter. "Can I have a cookie?" he asked, making puppy dog eyes.
"Of course you can," my mom hoisted him up on a chair and smiled at him, but it was short-lived. Once he had the cookie in his mouth, she pressed on. "Now, tell me about Percy hitting a girl?"
He smiled and told the story gladly.
Now let's get this straight: Tyson completely butchered the part about it being an accident. And he told the story in a way that he was the hero. I was hiding in the shadows by then.
After a while, he ran upstairs. My mom turned to me and I braced myself. "You hit a girl, Percy? That's not okay."
"Wait. Let me tell the story. Tyson is a child, you can't seriously believe that lie."
"Well, unless you start explaining yourself, that's exactly what I am going to be doing."
So I told her about how it was an accident, how I woke her up, and how despite everything he had just ruined for me, Tyson was kind of a hero.
"Did you apologize?"
"Did I apologize?" I mimicked. What kind of question was that?
"You're avoiding the question, Percy."
"Of course I did, Mom."
"Good, then you should bring some cookies for her, or find a way to make it up to her. Especially if Tyson said she was going to be so mad."
"Okay."
"Oh, and here's your flyer for the homework help club. I am so glad you're doing it!" She handed me the blue flyer.
"Thanks ma," I kissed her cheek and went upstairs.
I jumped on my bed and looked at the flyer in my hand.
Homework Help Club
Tutors: Juniper McMillan, Grover Underwood, Will Solace, and Annabeth Chase
Room: 502 with Clarisse LaRue (student organizer)
I looked at it again. My eyes focused on one name. Annabeth Chase?!?!? The girl I had hit, by accident, at the park? What was she going to say when she saw me? What if I was paired with Annabeth? Was she going to even help me with my homework? My insides turned with worry and what ifs. But there was a small part of me that thought that seeing her stormy grey eyes and golden locks again wasn't going to be so bad.
