Another Day of Hell

Then I close the front door, a skip in my step, eager go greet the day ahead.
As I walk out of the apartment complex, I am greeted with the familiar stench of Queens. The honking of horns and shouting of people all seems like background noise at this point. Pigeons and other birds crowd the sidewalks, looking for scraps. They are so used to humans that they are unbothered by people trying to shoo them. I gracefully step around them, brushing into the street for a moment.

Walking a little bit farther, I make it to the subway. I've learned that in the city, it's better to just keep your head down. People around me are shouting, tagging, and doing drugs in broad daylight, but I just put on a small fake smile and walk quickly past. Hopping on the packed-to-the-brim subway, I turn on some music in one of my earbuds to pass the time.

Before I know it, the subway is stopping at my exit. I push through the dense crowd of people in the station and hop down the platform stairs, to the front of my school. One thing that you should know about my school, is that it is a school for gifted students. It's called the Midtown School for Science and Technology. Now, I know what you're thinking. Yes, that is where Peter Parker goes to school in the movies and comics. They actually filmed Spider-Man: Homecoming here. But, regardless, that is where I attend classes!

I walk up to the school gates to see the daily crowd of students filtering through the first corridor. Inside, paper airplanes, drones, and other inventions are flying overhead. The sounds and sights around me make me feel small and menial, but I push those thoughts aside. None of it matters! I am perfect just as I am.

You see, even though this is a school for "gifted students", you still have your usual bullies, class clowns, jocks, lots of preps, the loners, the stoners, and everyone in-between. So, in many ways, it's just a normal high school.... sort of.

"Y/nnnnn!!!" Katie yells from down the hall. Next to her, Noe and Mackenzie stand with equally enthusiastic smiles.

I shut my locker and start to head over to theirs. But being my usual clumsy self, as soon as I turn around to take the first step, I run into someone and we both drop our books.
"Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry. I wasn't paying attention," I say without looking up, immediately dropping down to my knees to pick up the books.

"It's okay, I wasn't either. Are you alright?" Says a deep, but somehow light voice from above me. He bends down as well to help with the books. I tilt my head up to look at this stranger. It was Austin Glenn, one of the guys on the baseball team. His black, wavy hair sits folded underneath his baseball cap, and his Cubs jersey hangs loosely on his toned shoulders. I had never really had a crush on him, since we had never even made conversation, but I would say that he was handsome. In fact, I always thought he kind of looked like a younger RDJ.

I realized that I had been looking at him for too long, and I quickly went back to scooping up my books. Just then, I noticed a Marvel comic book peeking out of his Science textbook. I take it out and look at it. "Tony Stark: Iron Man" was displayed across the top. I look back up at him. He saw that I had noticed the comic book, and started to redden.

"I get a little bored sometimes in science," he said with a chuckle and a shrug. I smiled at him, flipping lightly through the pages.

"Iron Man's awesome, but Spider-Man's better," I replied, raising my eyebrows with a jokeful smirk.

"How so?" He asked back, crossing his arms playfully. By now, we were just
standing in the hallway, books in hand.

"Well, Tony Stark is funny and all, and super smart, but Spider-Man keeps his identity a secret to protect the ones he loves," I shoot back, smiling.

"Okay, I see your point. Spider-Man is pretty cool, but my faith will always lay in Iron Man," he says back, looking me in the eye with a smile.

"Well, if there's one thing I know, it's don't get in the way of a Marvel fan and their favorite character," I say laughing, putting my hands up in a surrender.
"I also know that class is starting in about three minutes," I add, handing him his comic back.

"No, no. You keep it," he says with a smile. "I've read it way too many times, anyway."

"Are you sure? What will you do to keep you busy in science?" I say back, putting on a sarcastic surprised face.

"Well, I guess I'll just have to learn something today," he replies, dramatically wiping a fake tear from his eye.

"I guess you will," I say back with a smile, staring into his eyes.
Just then, the bell rings.
"Right, well, got to get to class!" I say, turning on my heel towards my first period. As I walk away, I turn back and smile at him, before walking through the door.

A/n- Sorry about the super cringy writing again! I'm just going to say that you can just assume that I know it's cringy, but I won't put an a/n at the bottom of every page. Enjoy the next chapter and spread kindness!
