Percy stood, stunned, as the blonde girl hurled herself into his chest. She trembled, gripping his toga. He wanted to shove her off and comfort her at the same time. Instead, he said, "Who are you?"
He regretted it the second the words left his mouth. The blonde separated from him and looked at him in shock. Her lips trembled in agony, and the tears that welled in her gray eyes trickled down her face.
"Y-you don't remember me?" The girl implored meekly.
Percy wanted to say yes, he wanted to say he remembered her, but he didn't. Her face struck no chord in his heart. He tried to explain himself, but his desolate look told enough.
The blonde's eyes hardened in hatred. Before Percy could say a single word, the girl flipped him over her shoulder and pinned him to the ground. She locked her steely gaze on his face. "How dare you," she spat. "How dare you not remember me, Percy Jackson!" She said his name with such pain, Percy felt his own throat close up. The girl got up and ran back the way she came from.
"Annalise, wait!" he called after her. What was that? A name? Did Percy remember her after all?
She turned around slowly, looking even more broken. Oh, crap. He got her name wrong. There was no stopping the girl now. She sprinted back to the Greek ship and disappeared into the crowd.
As he eyed the blonde's receding frame, he knew what he had to do. Percy forced his lips to open, "I swear on the River Styx that I will remember that girl by the time this day comes again."
Pop. Everyone's jaws dropped in sync. Greeks, Romans, animals, statues exchanged looks of disbelief. "How stupid," Octavian scoffed, but his voice was masked by the rumbling of thunder.
The vow was sealed.
