I step into my apartment ten minutes after Landon had caused the scene. I threw my purse on the counter and fell onto the couch, slipping off my heels and rubbing my tender feet.I glanced at the clock. Three fifty. Shoot. I shot up quickly off the couch and ran into my closet. I glanced around, what does one wear to a college soccer game? I shrugged and pulled on some capri skinny jeans and grey t-shirt. I slip into my Nike tennis shoes and I brush out my straight hair before grabbing my bag, checking to make sure I had my notes, notepad, pens, phone, keys and wallet. I sped out the door, bumping into Peyton. "Woah there, where you going?" She asked, balancing herself. "I'm on my way to my first piece, see ya later." I say quickly heading out to the bus station. I quicken my pace and just barely make it aboard before it starts moving. I swipe my card and take a seat next to the empty window.
Thirty minutes later I am on the campus and asking some students for directions. "Oh yeah, okay so you're gonna walk a little ways down this street and then turn right and you should be right there." The girl who I asked tells me. I give her a smile. "Thank you so much."
"No problem," She says before walking off with her friends. I follow her instructions and find myself on a large field within moment and I make my way over to the bench where most of the players are standing around talking or hydrating. I walk over to who seems like the coach. "Hi, I'm Joanne Fletcher from the Chicago Tribune. I'm here to do a piece on the team and the game." I tell the older looking man with a kind smile. "Ah yes, miss Fletcher. We've been expecting you." He says, calling the team over and they all huddle around me. "Alright boys, this is Joanne Fletcher. She's the sports journalist from the Tribune you told me about. Be respectful and answer any questions she has." He turns to me. "They're all yours." I smile and nod before he walks away, leaving me with twenty incredibly attractive guys all staring at me. I begin the interview just asking basic questions about the team and how they all work together and how that plays into how they perform in a game. As I'm interviewing them people begin to fill the stadium and I spot a familiar face, making me go red. "Um, thank you all so much! I can't wait to write this piece. I hope you do well in your game!" I tell them and they all tell me a quick goodbye before I find myself storming over to the familiar face. "Landon, what are you doing here? With him?" I ask, seething. "Oh you mean Gavin? He's my brother, we're huge Northwestern fans. I think the better question is what are you doing here and how do you know Gavin?" Landon asks me. "I'm here because i'm writing my piece on this game, and Dr. Beckham is my cardiologist." I say, glaring at my handsome doctor, but only a smirk appears on his face. "Why don't you sit with us?" Dr. Beckham asks. "No. Isn't this against some sort of policy anyway? Besides Landon's annoying." I groan, crossing my arms. "What did you do?" He asks his brother. "Nothing." "Liar!" I exclaim. "He caused a scene in the middle of downtown, forcing me to go on a date with him." I say frantically, attracting stares. Dr. Beckham raises an eyebrow at both of us. "Aren't you dating that Stacey girl?" Dr. Beckham asks Landon, and Landon only shrugs. "Yeah but Jo's hot." I glare at him. "You pig, I don't want to go any where with you." I say stomping away, dramatically. "Joey wait." I hear a voice call but I keep going until a hand grasps my arm, spinning me around. "Look I'm sorry about Landon. He's always been like that." Dr. Beckham says, giving me a sympathetic look. "Yeah well, douchebags aren't anything I'm not used too." I grumble under my breath. "Why did you agree to go out with him anyway?" He asks, sounding a bit sad. "Because he was causing a scene in the middle of downtown Chicago and he wasn't going to leave me alone until I agreed. Look, I don't have to explain myself to you. You're my doctor, we're not friends, we aren't dating just leave me alone besides being my doctor okay?" "Seriously, we can't even be friends?" He asks, a bit angrily. "No because then I'll end up falling for you and you'll end up breaking my heart just like all the others and I can't take that again." I say, feeling tears well up in my eyes.
"Joey, I won't do that to you. Please just be my friend." He begs. I raise my eyes to meet his, seeing small tears in his eyes. "Okay, I guess we can be friends. But nothing more and I mean it, Gavin." I say sternly as he wraps me in a tight hug. I take in a deep breath, inhaling his heavenly cologne. "You smell good," I mumble into his shirt, causing him to let out a loud laugh and I pull away from his chest. "Now come watch the game with me." He says, grabbing my hand and pulling me in the direction him his and his brother's seats.
After an hour of cheering, screaming and jumping around the game was over and Northwestern had won 6-2. "That was awesome!" I cheer. "Yeah, we go to every home game." Gavin tells me. "I mean I like sports but I've never been into soccer, this was so fun. I mean, besides all the drama at the beginning." Throughout the game Landon and I became friends, and he told me that I didn't have to go out with him if I didn't want too and for that I was thankful. "Did you drive here?" Gavin asks as we exit the stadium. "No, I took the bus." I inform him. "You're not going back on the bus, that's not safe." He says, frowning. "Let me drive you home."
"No, really. It's fine. I do it all the time." Gavin stops in his tracks and I notice Landon has disappeared. "Where'd Landon go?" "Back to his dorm." "Wait, he's still in college, ew." I say, scrunching my nose causing a harmonious laugh to escape Gavin. "But seriously, i'm not letting you take the bus home. It's too dangerous." I let out a sigh. "Fine." A huge smile spreads across his face as he leads me to his car, and my jaw drops. "You drive a Bugatti?" He shrugs. "Jobs pays well, babe." He responds opening the car door for me. "Thank you very much." I say, sliding into the leather interior. Seconds later Gavin is in the car and revving the engine. "So what's your address?" he says, peeling out of the parking lot at dangerous speeds. I tell him and he nods before turning to the radio, which happens to be playing one of my favorite songs and we both reach to turn up the volume at the same time, our hands colliding. I pull away quickly,a blush spreading across my face. "Sorry, it's my favorite song." I tell him as he cranks it up. "Really? me too. Ed sheeran's a lyrical genius." He tells me, his eyes trained on the road. "There's no way you like Ed Sheeran." I say in disbelief. "Joey I just told you I love him." he says letting out a hearty chuckle and I begin to sing along softly before we pull up in front of my complex. "Well this is it." I say, unbuckling my seat belt. "I'll walk you." He says, cutting the engine. "Oh you really don't have too." I say, stepping out of the luxury car. "Now what kind of a friend would I be if I let you walk alone." He says catching up with me and we walk in silence for a minute before we reach my door and I turn to face him. "Um, well. this is it." I say, nervously brushing my hair behind my ear. "It's nice, I like it." He says, glancing around briefly before staring into my eyes with his beautiful ones. For a second it feels like he's leaning closer. "um, well goodnight." I say a bit awkwardly. "goodnight Joey." He says, stuffing his hands in his pockets and walking away as I step inside my apartment.
