"Whatever, so um. What are you doing here?" He says, scratching the
back of his neck. "Well I'm here with my roommate Peyton," I take a
glance to the side to see that she is no longer here, "Who is no
longer here for a girls night out but now I guess i'm all by myself."
"You've got me." Gavin says, leaning against the counter. "That's
besides the point, you're not even a girl." I joke. He laughs, "I
guess you're right but at least i'm not leaving you alone right?" he
asks, taking a swig of his drink. "Yeah I guess, and you'll give me a
ride home in that fancy car of yours and you'll steal my phone just to
have an excuse to show up at my house in the morning right?" I joke,
smirking a bit. "That is so not what happened and you know it." He
smiles, showing off his amazing dimples and brilliantly beautiful
teeth. "Whatever, you like me and you know it." I blurt before I can
even think about it and my hand flies up to cover my mouth, as if that
would erase my words. His smile is replaced with a smirk, "and what if
I do?" He asks, leaning closer, a bit too close for my liking. "I
didn't mean to say that. You know how I feel." I say, hopping out of
my seat and dashing out of the door. Why did I say that, I don't like
him and he surely can't like me. I mean I know he flirts with me but
he's a guy, he probably flirts with everything in a skirt. "Joey,
please wait." a voice calls after me but I keep walking even though
it's dark, I don't know where i'm going, and it's beginning to rain. A
hand grabs my arm stopping me in my tracks, "Joey, please. Can we talk
about this?" I turn to face him. "We have nothing to talk about Gavin!
I've told you I feel. We are nothing, we won't be anything. I'm not
looking for anything remotely romantic, plus you're my doctor and i'm
your patient. I think that's like illegal or something." I shout,
attracting stares from the few people who are out this late. "It's
only illegal if you aren't in your right mental state." He states
bluntly, and the rain begins to pour down harder. "Well you know my
other reason." I say, crossing my arms, as my hair begins to stick to
my head due to the rain. "That reason is bullcrap Joey. You and I both
know it too. We both feel this connection, this pull when we're
together and when we aren't I don't stop thinking about you. That
reason isn't good enough, I know you aren't the type of girl who
would lead someone on so you would be lying if you said you didn't
feel the same way about me as I feel about you." He rants. Everything
he says is true, I feel this incredibly undeniable connection to him.
"I have other reasons okay, please just leave it alone. If you want to
be friends that's fine but I really can't be more with you, with
anyone. No matter how I feel." I say mumbling. His face softens a bit.
"At least tell me you feel the same about me." He says in a pleading
tone. "Gavin, it's not important." I say, trying to avoid the answer
to this question. "Maybe not to you, but it is to me. I just need to
know. Please Joey." He grabs each of my wet hands into his, now that
we are both soaked head to toe by the rain. "Okay, the truth is... I
think I like you. I don't really know. I just know that I feel this
deep connection with you but i'm not sure in what way. Are you happy?"
I ask a bit irritated, now that I'm cold. "Not until I can drive you
home." He says, wrapping an arm around me in attempt to warm me up.
"You're not really helping your case." I tell him as he guides me to
his sleek black car. "Well, I am your doctor, it's my responsibility
to make sure you're okay." I roll my eyes as he opens the door for me.
"Whatever Mr. Cardiologist." I tell him once he's started the car. The
nickname causes a smirk on his gorgeous features and he turns the heat
all the way up.
The rest of the ride to my apartment was silent besides the soft
music playing in the background. Every now and then I would catch his
wandering eyes on me instead of the road, but he would immediately
turn them back. When he parked, the rain had lightened up and I got
out of his car. "Well thanks for the ride. I'm sorry i got your seats
wet." He shrugs, "No big deal. I'll see you around." He says before
turning around and getting into his car. When I get inside I see
Peyton passed out on the couch. I sigh and head to my room to shower
and change. Once I'm finished I crawl in bed and check the time for
once. It's around two thirty am. I check my phone to see a text from
Gavin.
Gavin: I'm sorry.
Me: about what?
Gavin: about tonight.
Me: don't be, you can't help the way you feel.
Gavin: I should tell you something...
Me: What is it?
Gavin: I don't think we should see each other outside of appointments,
goodnight Joey.
Me: GAVIN. WHAT, WHY?
I wait for ten minutes for a response, when I realize he isn't going
to respond. this is just great. I lost one of my greatest friends here
in Chicago.
The next morning I wake up to the Sun shining in my eyes. I take my
time waking up when I remember what Gavin said last night. He said he
doesn't even want to be friends. Is it because he thinks I'm leading
him on, because i've made it perfectly clear how i feel. I shake the
thoughts from my head as I make my way to the kitchen to make myself a
cup of coffee to wake up too. I turn on the television and mindlessly
watch it for a while, sipping on the warm liquid. I am in the middle
of watching the today show when my mom calls. "Mom?" I ask into the
receiver once i've accepted the call. "Honey Hi!" She says, with
excitement. "Hi mom, what's going on?" I ask cautiously. "Well I
called to remind you that your cousin's wedding is this weekend and
you need to be here." I let out a deep sigh, having forgotten. "Okay."
"Bring a date, and some friends okay. We can surely accommodate them.
Oh and Doctor Blake says you need to bring Dr. Beckham with you." "But
mo-" "No if's and's or but's missy. Doctor's orders. See you in week
love you!" She says excitedly before hanging up on me. great. I have
to drive all the way to New York with Gavin, who doesn't even want to
be friends, this should be great.
