Race to Confess
Lucy x Reader (Male!)

"Mira," I slumped on the table, sighing with my cheek lying on the surface," I give up."

The Strauss sister walked over to place my favorite rink in front of me, "Is it about Lucy?"

My response was a silent yes.

For months I had developed feelings towards the Celestial Mage. At first I thought it was a phase, something short that would quickly fade away. But instead it grew stronger and I had to hide my feelings whenever she was in front of me.

I had no choice, she was always with Natsu, who seemed to make her much happier. He was a competition that I'd never win against.

"Have you told her?" Mirajane asked, plucking me out of my thoughts.

"...Not yet," I sighed.

"Will you?"

"Probably not."

Another sigh escaped my lips and my finger made imaginary circles on the table's surface.

"What about Natsu?"

"I don't see guys like that."

"I meant if he does."

I lifted my head, partially brought out of my daze, "He does what?"

Mira smiled. She smiled the smile that knows things, then she told me how Natsu was approaching Lucy a little different than normal. He was being a lot closer to her and it didn't seem like it'd take long until he confessed.

Not that it was surprising, everyone knew it was a matter of time for those two. Even I learned to accept their future relationship the hard way.

I placed my head back down, drifting myself into the depressing state. There wasn't anything else I needed to be reminded about..

"You know," Mira continued, "I never saw you as the type to back down. Especially when you have a good chance."

"I only do that when–," I paused, suddenly clicking together what she said, "You think I have a chance?"

She nodded, making my heart flutter, "Lucy seems to be showing some interest. Not just Natsu, but you too."

My eyes lit up and I quickly chugged down my drink before standing up, "Thanks Mira!"

With a sudden jolt of life back in me, I ran out the guild with one person in mind.

'Lucy, I have to tell you before Natsu does first!'

I knew she just chose a job within the last hour, so she should be packing her bag. Just before she left the guild, she told me that if I needed anything, I should come to her house before eleven thirty. I checked the time and notice there were five minutes left.

My heart pumped as I sprinted to her house. When I arrived there was no one there. The door was locked, windows were shut, and no answer to the doorbell.

"Hey youngster, looking for the blonde girl?"

I turned to see the usual boatman waving to me. I nodded and he pointed in the direction of the train station.

"Thanks!" I shouted as I ran down the street.

'Lucy, please don't leave yet,' I begged in my head.

My ears picked up the train whistle growing louder as I came closer to the station. And as I got closer to my destination, I spotted pink and blonde hair, and blue fur.

"Lucy!" I couldn't help but call for her.

She turned with a surprised expression and stopped, waiting for me to catch up. Once I got there, I spoke to her with jagged breaths.

"Lu-cy, can I - talk - to you," I glanced up at her partner, "privately?"

She looked at Natsu.

"Please."

"Sure," she replied and we walked a decent distance away from the dragonslayer and Exceed.

Once we were finally alone, my heart wouldn't calm down. It also didn't help that words were having difficulties forming.

"What is it (y/n)?"

I took a breath, "Lucy, what do you think of Natsu?"

"Eh?" she blinked, "He's just a friend, my teammate."

"What about me?"

"?"

"What do you think about me?"

"Wait. What?. I–," she stuttered, her face giving off a light shade of pink, "You're nice.. Considerate... A friend."

My heart sank when I heard the words 'a friend.' Anyone's would when they hear the person they love call them 'a friend.'

"Lucy," I don't want to be' a friend.' I want us to be more."

'Holy crap!' My face turned bright red, 'What the hell did I just say?!'

But instead of stopping, like I normally did, my mind pushed my mouth to continue.

"I like you Lucy. I really do. Do you think we can take our friendship to the next level?"

I watched her reaction, hoping for the answer I had in mind. Her cheeks had blushed red and her lips spread apart to reply.

"Could I answer later?" her eyes glanced to the floor, "Like when I finish the job?"

My head robotically nodded, "Talk your time. I'll be waiting."

Then she walked away, back to where Natsu was, and left me standing still. I took a breath, now that it was over.

'I did it,' I praised myself before turning to go back to the guild.

But then I froze in place. I overheard something that made my heart nearly explode.

"Hey Lucy, what happened? You seem to be pretty happy," Natsu asked.

"Hm? Oh nothing much," the Celestial Wizard happily stated, "I'll let you know after the job."

A/n: Attempted doing a different persepctive! Not the best, but I'll get better. ^-^

Edit: Wow. Lots of readers thought I made him friend-zoned. I didn't intend on that, since Lucy was interested in him too, buuuutttt sure he can be friend-zoned if you would like it to end that way. ( ^ω^ )

Btw. It's been what, a year, and I finally put a title! Although I don't think it fits very well.
