¨You're doing great, Luz.¨ Sarah's voice suddenly swept through the silence of the room.

¨Yeah, I was expecting some panic attack, a weird-ass rant about her favorite color, or something equally ridiculous.¨ Issac annoyingly added, which just tempted Luz to throw out the earpiece. She decided against it after quickly realizing what a bad idea that was.

Luz turned her attention back to the man. She noticed him staring at her then. Intently with evident distrust, from the way he hunched over in his corner to the way he slowly inched away from her, it was apparent how protective he was over his territory, watching for any sign of danger.

Upon closer observation, Luz noticed the large array of scars that danced across his bare chest, the tough, almost leather-like dark skin he gained from many years under the unforgiving sun, the sudden harsh winters that ultimately lead to his early demise. Not a single part of this man seemed soft, just tough tense muscle. Much to Luz's relief, she noticed a long thick metal chain wrapped around his left leg leading to the back of the wall. As twisted as it was, she was grateful that the scary caveman was chained up and less likely to harm her.

 Well, now what?

What do you mean what? Talk to him, you weirdo.

Oh yeah, let's talk to the caveman chained up and staring at us like we killed his pet dog. That seems smart. HE CAN'T EVEN TALK; HE'S 2 MILLION YEARS OLD!

¨Um Miss, are you okay in there?¨ A guard asked through her earpiece, breaking Luz out of her psychotic rant.

¨Yep! sorry about that, just having a strategy meeting.¨ Luz answered back sheepishly.

¨Im not even going to ask.¨ Issac groaned out.

Great now they think you're crazy.

What's this ¨You're¨ nonsense? Both of us are included in the sentiment, too, you narc.

I am not a narc. You're the one who blabbed about the whole of this operation.

¨ALRIGHT!¨ Luz shrieked, suddenly starling everyone, including the caveman who just backed up more in his self claimed corner.

¨Hi I'm Luz ill be your new teacher this semester thing I don't really know how long ill teach you, though if I'm honest.¨ The man stared.

¨You can call me Ms. Gonzales, Ms. G, or any other cool nickname you got. My friends call me Lu sometimes, which is weird because Luz is not a hard name to say or pronounce.¨ The man again just stared.

¨Not that any of this matters since you have no idea what I'm saying anyway¨ Luz added while sitting down in the middle of the room.

¨No you are doing exponentially. as long as you do not bare teeth or show any other obvious signs of aggression, he should get used to you and your voice in time.¨ Shiro spoke through her earpiece.

¨Okay, then keep talking, got it.¨ She muttered out loud to herself.

¨Not like that'll be very hard for her-OW!¨ Isaac said, ¨What was that for?¨

¨That was for being a dick, obviously.¨ Sarah quipped quickly.

Luz ignored them and instead started to slowly walk towards the caveman seeing as talking wasn't getting them anywhere. She tried to make as little eye contact as possible, but from the corner of her eye, she could see him getting increasingly agitated. A loud animalistic snarl out of him was enough to keep her rooted to her spot, making only a few feet in progress.

¨Okay,  you don't like that. That's cool. Who wants strangers in their personal bubble anyways? not me, that's for sure.¨ Luz said, laughing nervously when the man had no change in attitude.

¨Try showing your submission. You know how men are. They can't handle another alpha.¨ Sarah said,

good idea, we should do that.

Shut up. I know what I'm doing. Now, how do I show that I'm not a threat? Oh, I know Trico does this all the time. It can't fail.

Luz quickly got down on all fours and proceeded to roll over, effectively showing her stomach to her supposed ¨predator¨ This seemed to have worked as the man stopped all aggressive movements to crouch down again and stare at Luz's behavior.

I think it's working! What do I do now, though? Why do I never think things through?

Suddenly the caveman started mumbling nonsense at her while getting closer to the center of the room.

¨bmm bak mhmm.¨ He said rather excitedly.

Well, what a change in attitude to bad I didn't study caveman, just Latin.

¨mmm nng bak baa¨ He spoke once more, staring at her almost expectantly. His voice was low, gruff, what you would expect from someone who didn't speak often. What threw Luz off, however, was the repeat in his speech.

Maybe this is an actual language we could communicate with. What are the chances he mumbles the same thing twice?

¨Bak?¨ Luz asked softly after lifting herself from the ground to face him again.

This made the caveman jump up and yelled louder.

¨MMM BAK ggh ghh!¨ he shouted, pointing at himself.

That must be his name.

¨Are you alright in there, Ms. Gonzales? Would you like us to subdue the target?¨ A guard asked her suddenly.

Why would they try to make me leave when I just made progress? They were practically besties now.

¨No I'm fine. I think I'm getting through to him, actually.¨ She said, her tone displaying her growing glee as she got closer to him.

¨MMM MMM¨, The man, shouted out

¨Yes, Bak MMMM, whatever that means, I'm in.¨ Luz giggled the reality of the situation, dawning on her. A prehistoric human trusted and wanted to befriend her.

Suddenly Bak reached out and caught Luz's arm, draining any previous excitement out of her body as he pulled her to his chest, his grip tightening as she tried pulling away.

ABORT ABORT CAVEMAN TRYING TO KILL US, NOT BEFRIEND

Luz shrieked in pure fear as the door to the room burst open, two guards appearing through it. This angered Bak, who growled loudly, his grip becoming painfully tight.

¨MMMM GHHH MMM.¨ Bak yelled, turning his body around, effectively shielding Luz from her potential salvation.

¨Permisson to shoot, sir!¨ Yelled one guard.

¨Tranqs only don't hit the girl!¨ Yelled someone else.

Everything passed by in a blur. One second, Luz was being held in a death grip by Bak; in the next, she looked on at his limp figure while she was dragged away. The last thing she could see before the doors shut was Bak's hand, trying desperately to reach out to her only to fall limp on the ground.

Then darkness.
