Trigger warning: homophobia and homophobic slurs
Kuroo and I grew really close over the next couple of years. We spent time together outside of school and we even went to a couple of pride events together. I really enjoyed his company. In fact, I... sort of started to like him towards the beginning of third year.
I started taking T six months before third year started. I had my name legally changed before nationals in first year, but I still wear a binder and top surgery is scheduled after graduation.
I have a feeling he might know I like him, because he constantly jokes about holding hands or kissing and he says things like, "Ready for our date?" whenever we hang out. The thought of him knowing scares the crap out of me, so I act like I don't like his jokes and that he pisses me off.
Kuroo always leaves the classroom as soon as the lunchbell rings to eat with Kenma, but one day, he stopped.
"Hey, Yaku?"
I turned my head, "Hm? What's up?"
"Meet me in the clubroom after practice. I need to talk to you," he said in a hushed voice.
My heart thumped. Part of me hoped he was going to ask me to go out with him, but I knew that wouldn't happen. Not knowing what he wanted to tell me made me anxious, but I didn't ask.
"Sure."
He left to go see Kenma and I went to go see Nobuyuki. Practice came and passed like it normally did. I trained Lev on receives and helped others with serving practice. Once practice was over, Kuroo and I waited for everyone to leave before we talked.
"What is it?" I asked.
Kuroo turned to me and sighed, "I'm coming out to my mom tonight..."
I raised my eyebrows and blinked, "Oh, you are?"
He rubbed his neck, "Yeah..."
"You look nervous."
"That's cuz I am, dude!"
"Well, it's scary for everyone. I'm proud of you, though. Is that all you wanted to tell me?"
"Can you help me?" he asked.
I tilted my head, "How so?"
"I don't know what to say..."
"I'm bisexual, I like girls and boys, I'm bi," I suggested.
"No, I mean I don't know how to start."
"Do you want to rehearse before you go home?"
He looked at me, "If... you're okay with that."
I turned to him, "Okay, pretend I'm your mom."
Kuroo opened his mouth before averting his eyes and pushing his hand through his hair. I suddenly became painfully aware of the silence of the room and I gestured Kuroo to say something.
"Uh-" he looked down, "...Mom, I have to tell you something?"
"Too cliche. She'll say you're bi before you do if you open with that."
"Well, what did you say when you came out?"
"I said, can I talk to you?"
He nodded his head, "Okay."
I put my hands on my hips and waited for him to repeat it.
"So... Can I talk to you, Mom?"
"Sure, Tetsurō. What is it?" I played along.
"Uhhh-" I guess he wasn't expecting that, because he looked away and bit his lip.
