Have you ever thought you were meant for something big? That your whole life was leading you to one big moment in your life, I did. My name is Jase Smith. I am a sophomore in high school and I live in a small town called Kambree, Texas. It's a town where everyone knew each others name and families, where being different was not really expected and if you didn't live up to their expectations or moral standards you were considered an outcast. I felt like that anyways so, it really didn't make a difference. I only have a few friends their names are Madelyn and Keatyn. We all became friends in our schools band program. Were I thought if you where in band you were considered cool and popular. Boy, was I wrong. Don't get me wrong I love my schools band and the people in it. I just thought it would make me feel noticed. My parents are the typical southern parents. They talk with an accent and they have loud mouth opinions about everything. My dad lived in Kambree his whole life, my mom on the other hand moved here. Why on Earth would someone move to a town like this, I thought. We were all in the dinning room were we talked about our day. My sister and brother was always the ones with the more exciting stories. I just looked at my brother Tyler and just smiled. We both just found it amusing that our sister Kate was trying to convince our parents that she was an angel. Kate and Tyler were the popular ones and I was the quite one. Then, after Kate finished her story from school. My parents looked towards me and I actually had something to say for once. Usually, I would normally would have said pass but, there was something that I just had to get out. I was hesitant for a little bit, but I just blurted it out. I said, " My band director told me that I had talent and that I should start looking for music colleges and study music". My parents and my siblings were speechless. Then I continued, "He said I had the potential to be a great music composer or a classical musician". The tension was so high that you can feel the awkwardness and the confusion in the room. My dad took a moment then began, " son you know you can't do that right? " I was confused but I just stared at him with an adjacent look. Then I asked, "Why". My father, the man could make you and your opinions sound wrong and stupid. He looked at me and began to lecture, " You can't do that because you got to stay here and you got to take care of your mother and I when we are old." I tried to say something but he just kept talking. "You are not seriously thinking about moving to a college far away from your family? " he said . "Well, that was a plus. " I thought. My dad ended his lecture with "Jase, we love you and we don't want you to get your hopes up and we just want you here with us. " I just walked away into my room. My room was neatly organized, filled with sheet music and college packets. My mind was just racing with thoughts and with anger. I thought parents were supposed to support their kids, not tear them down. I just started ranting thinking as someone was listening. It started to sink in and I began to calm down and just began doing what I love doing best. Writing my thoughts in music.
