CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE
raison d'être

⋆*✧・゚:⋆*・゚:*✧・゚:*✧・゚:

DIEGO'S CAR PULLED to a stop in front of the police station, and Nadine tore her head off the window she'd been leaning against for the past twenty minutes. She was in the backseat with Allison; Five and Diego sat up front, the latter having insisted he drive and the former claiming that his status as the eldest member of the group earned him shotgun. Classic, self-righteous Five Hargreeves move. Though it wasn't like Nadine was complaining. She wouldn't put it past Diego to 'accidentally' crash the car if he sat next to her for too long. Nor would she put it past herself to 'accidentally' slam his head into the steering wheel.

"I know this Jenkins dude has to have a record," Diego said now, twisting his keys out of the ignition. He unbuckled his seatbelt. "We just gotta get our hands on this file."

"And your plan is to what?" Allison asked. "Waltz in there and just ask for it?"

"I know the station like the back of my hand, sis. I've spent a lot of time inside."

"Handcuffed," Allison reminded him. Nadine swivelled her gaze over to Diego. Huh. She wouldn't have thought he'd have it in him, obsessive vigilante or not.

"Whatever." Diego brushed off her reminder like it was anything other than the fact he'd been arrested numerous times. "Here's the plan."

There he goes again, Nadine thought, suppressing the urge to roll her eyes. She'd done it so much this week, dealing with these emotionally stunted siblings, that she thought she might strain them. Or roll them right out of her head.

"Plan?" Five repeated. "I'm just gonna blink in and get the file."

"No, that's not..." Diego shook his head as if it was a crazy idea instead of a perfectly rational option, "You don't know the ins and outs of this place, okay?"

"I literally just did this yesterday."

"What?"

"My yesterday, not your yesterday," Five explained. Nadine blinked. No wonder she hadn't been able to find the little shit. He'd been in between time. Five continued, "It'll take me two seconds. Why don't I just go?"

"Listen to me," Diego interrupted. "You are not going in there. I made a call. That's what a leader does. He leads."

"Being a leader is overrated," Nadine grumbled, but Diego was already sliding out of the car, heading for the police station. Nadine had no idea what his plan was for getting his hands on Jenkins' file (if he even had one—Diego obviously hadn't thought that aspect through), and figured she was in for a long wait, so she leaned back in her seat, staring out the window again.
