Damon Salvatore cheated death.

Sure, he did die, but he came back.

He told no one, he was sure this would be good for Elena.

Whenever he was around she only got into trouble, and risked her own life. He wasn't having it.

Right after he and Bonnie died, her grams made sure they didn't.

They were brought back. He wanted to rush into Elena's arms and tell her He was back and hers.

They knew that wasn't a good idea.

So Bonnie went back, and he left town. For good.

The next day, the calls kicked in. And they all went to v o i c e m a i l.

The room was dark as she laid in the vacant bed.

His side was still unmade from the previous morning.

Damon was gone, and there was no way to get him back.

She needed to hear his voice, it would be the only thing to keep her going.

As she picked up her phone and dialed his number, she hesitated.

Hearing his voice would definitely break her, but keep her sane at the same time.

"Damon Salvatore here, what do you need?"

She chuckled and shook her head. "Really? That's all I get? I need to hear your voice Damon. Your snarky comments and see your quirky smile."

"God, Damon. It's so hard. I woke up today with a smile because I knew I'd wake up to you. I was wrong. I started to cry, as I always do. You know me, it seems once the crying starts it never stops, but this time was different."

She paused for a moment and began to speak.

"This was different because I lost the love of my life. You mean more to me than anyone else ever has. I love you so much Damon. You know, I warned you about this. I told you that something would go wrong. I don't care about the stupid travelers or any of it. I just wanted you."

She let out a small, muffled sob but didn't want to cry into a phone.

"I miss you, Damon. And I love you so much. I will call tomorrow, maybe you'll magically appear. Or maybe not."

She breathed into the phone and hung up.

The phone felt out of her hands as she broke down.

She couldn't do this, she wouldn't get through this.

Not without Damon.
