You stared at your phone, waiting for your best friend Nick to call you. You and Nick had known each other since you were kids but really started getting close in middle school. From late-night calls on Discord while getting drunk to texting 24/7, you and him were inseparable.

As you two grew older, things that were once normal started to seem a little weird. Your parents were wary about sleeping over at Nick's house once you entered high school, and almost everyone around you thought you were dating. At times, it created serious tension between you and Nick, but most of the time you both chose to ignore it.

Until Nick got a girlfriend.

Everyone knew Nick was head-over-heels for the cheerleading team's captain, Ainsley. Her long, blonde locks of her complimented her blue eyes, and with Nick being the star wide receiver on the football team he spent a LOT of time with her. You missed his one-on-one attention, though you would never admit it, but you were happy for him regardless.

Even after long practices or late night games, Nick would always call you for a little bit. Sure, it wasn't as long as it used to be, but at this rate you missed him so much that you'd take any time with him. You heard your phone vibrate repeatedly in the pocket of your hoodie and slipped it out to check who it was. It was Nick; his contact name read "Sapnap <3" which was an old nickname from when you two used to play video games together quite often. The picture was of Nick sitting on the pavement of a parking lot, next to you with your head in his lap and holding a gas station drink. You smiled at the picture and reminisced about that night before picking up the phone.

"Hey Sap," you said, eager to hear about the game today. "How was the game?"

"It was fine I guess," Nick answered shallowly.

Woah. This was the first time Nick had ever sounded this monotone. If his team won the game, he was always ecstatic. If they lost the game, he was usually angry. But this? This was something you had never seen before.

"Sap..." you treaded lightly with your words since you knew something was wrong. "Everything okay?"

"Not really," he replied blandly. You were glad he was always honest with you and didn't sugarcoat how he was feeling.

"Wanna talk about it? We can go for a drive and talk," you suggested. "Besides, it's been forever. I miss hanging out with you."

"Yeah, I'm gonna shower and pick you up in ten, cool?" Nick stated. His voice sounded a little more lively at the thought of going for a drive, which was a relief to you.

"Cool, text me when you're here, love you," you replied. You fell back on your bed on top of the covers and scrolled on your phone, noticing that it was almost 11 PM. You decided to listen to some music before Nick picked you up.

On the other side of town, Nick was taking a freezing cold shower at his house. He ran his hands through his hair, replaying everything that had happened after the game in his head over and over again.

"This isn't going to work, Nick," Ainsley said, looking down at her feet.

"Wha-What the hell happened? I thought we were doing fine! Our date last week was perfect! Was it something I said?"

Ainsley shook her head, her eyes glued to the ground. Impatient for an explanation, Nick stepped close to her and lifted her face so their eyes would meet. Ainsley's face was stained with tears as they continued to form, streaming down her cheeks one at a time.

And with that one look, Nick seemed to have figured everything out.

"There's someone else, isn't there Ainsley," Nick stated coldly, his eyes piercing through her.
