cacti walked back and forth in the cave. "azure, you think pine is alright?"

she laughed. "I'm sure he's fine, stop worrying, the icewings are well guarded."

"queen snowfall almost got murdered!"

"which is why they will have more guards posted. pine will be fine." she wrapped a wing around cacti. "come on."

he leaned against his best friend and walked with her back to the copper winglet cave. it felt empty, the only one in the cave was owl, she was waiting for cacti. cacti hadn't seen owl around, she was more of a dragon who kept to herself, she was friends with moon, qibli, and winter. she was a nightwing-skywing hybrid, her wings were like pools of stars, the red of her scales bled into a purple-ish color at her wings.

"er-- hello."

she turned. "oh, cacti right?" she smiled at azure, and turned back to him. "I need to speak to you." he looked at her, his black eyes flashing with worry.

she cleared her throat. "your father. he's general bronze, right?" his face went blank. "yes, and?"

"he sent us a note, demanding for you to come home."

"I'm not going."

"we're not letting you." cacti looked surprised. "really?"

"queen thorn has been alerted that one of her generals is abusing his child."

cacti's large wings fluttered with anger at his father. he remembered the times when bronze would scold him. he tried to run away, but his father found him. "it won't help, he'll still come after me, he won't stop. even if he's dead his ghost will still haunt me."

owl's talons twitched with anger and frustration. cacti didn't know this, but she knew what it had felt like. "I will let them know." she walked out, her head turned, her bright purple eyes met his. "goodnight."

cacti ran for his life, his talons making marks in the sand, but they faded away as the small grains of sand covered his tracks, he flicked his forked tongue in frustration. 'I can get away.' he repeated in his head. 'I can get away.'

his dull sandy scales seemed to blend in with the sandy hills, he was a fast blur, a tangle of wings and legs. nothing. nothing compared to the large desert.

he was thirsty, his vision blurred. 'is that a dragon?' a dark shape landed in front of him.

'no, i'm just tired.' then the dark spot grew closer, and talons wrapped around him.

and he blacked out.

cacti woke, his father was standing over him. he tsked, his black tongue flicking close to cacti's eyes.

"you really shouldn't be wandering by yourself." then a slap to his head, his father's wing raised beside him.

"cacti? cacti! wake up!"

"I'm never going back," he said to the blurry blue and yellow shape as he fell back into another feverish nightmare. "never going back."

writers be like: pain for you, and you, and you too

don't worry, it's for character development guys, bronze gets *cough* better *cough* killed *cough* in the end. really sorry for the extremely short chapters lately, I just haven't been able to write a lot lately, and I'm in the middle of so many things.

thank you clove for editing this! you are a fucking lifesaver, I should probably go edit your story now.
