I stood up from my desk and walked over to Monsieur Claude's table. I handed him the test and walked over to Mrs. Jenni, our school counselor.
"Hello Ellie, we need to talk," Mrs. Jenni said walking down the hall to her office.
I followed her to her office. What could I possibly have done? This time when I walked the halls were silent. This was not normal in the slightest.
When the door was in my sight I started shaking. I was freaking out, but it was probably nothing. She probably just wanted to ask if I was going to be at the track meet later today.
We both walked into the room. Mrs. Jenni said, "Ellie please take a seat," She said gesturing to the seat in front of her desk.
I sat down in the seat and blurted out, "I am going to be at the track meet later today," I said.
"Oh that was not what I wanted to talk about," She said, the sadness returning to her face. I kept quiet as she continued, " how have all your tests been so far today," she said trying to make small talk.
"Umm, good," I said knowing that this was not what she wanted to talk about.
"The principal is going to come in a little bit to discuss the matter," she said, and talk about magic. Our principal, Ms, Hide, came in.
"Hello Mrs. Hidie," Our counselor said.
"Hello," she said back. "Ellie, we are going to discuss something about your parents today," She said sitting in the seat next to me. She grabbed my hands."Your parents were on their way to Virginia today right," She said. I nodded my head, scared of what is going to happen next. "Your parents got in a car crash on the way there, they are being brought to CCK hospital," she said.
No no no this could not be happening. I felt my eyes water up. I stood up, " Can I go to them," I said.
"Yes we want you to go," she said standing up too.
I was about to run off when I remembered that I did not have a car, so I said "I rode in my boyfriend's car today so can I get him to come with me," I said I needed to go now.
"Yes please do," Mrs. Hidie said.
When she said that I ran out of the room. I ran to classroom 381 where Beckett had English and I opened the doors. I could feel my tears run down my face. When I opened the door to the classroom everybody stared at me. "Um hi, I have permission to ask Beckett to come with me," I said and Mrs. Hidie came behind me.
Beckett stood up and walked over to me. When he got out of the classroom he said, "What happened,"
My tears came even harder. "My parents got into a car accident," I said, still looking down at the ground. "I need you to drive me to the CCK Hospital, and quick," I wiped my eyes as we stepped outside. Beckett wrapped me in a hug.
"Everything is going to be alright," he said, tucking my hair behind my ear and wiping my eyes.
I got into the car, closing the door. When he started the car, he kept saying, "It is going to be alright,"
After like five minutes in the car, my phone started to buzz. I picked it up looking at the unfamiliar number. I answered with a "Hello," my voice scratchy from crying.
"Hi, is this Ellie Turner," The woman on the other side said.
I looked at Beckett and he gave me a brief look back. "Um yes I am Ellie Turner," I said back.
"I am sorry honey, but I am here to inform you that your parents passed five minutes ago on the ride to the hospital," She said.
My heart stopped. "Wait what," I said.
"I am sorry honey," She said one more time.
All my tears broke out. I hung up. Beckett looked over at me, all I said was "There gone," I said and he stopped the car.
I got out and ran to the sidewalk. I sat down tucking my knees to my chest and cried. They can not be gone. They have to be okay. Please come back. I thought I would never move again. I saw Beckett on the phone but then he rushed over to me.
"Please tell me this is not real. I am just in a bad dream," I said to him.
He hugged me sitting down too. We stayed like this for about fifteen minutes until a white van pulled up next to our car. Beckett whispered into my ears, "I called my parents to come and help you," He said.
The thought of parents made me want to stab myself. "Please no Beckett," I said as he pulled me up.
His parents came rushing over to me and grabbed me too. "Please no," I said again. "Can I please wake up, please," I said, begging and begging.
They put me in the back seat of their car and Beckett sat next to me. "We are going to take you back to our house okay honey," Beckett's mom Mary said.
I did not respond. I just kept staring into blankness crying. I would never be the same. This would scare me for life.
When we approached the house I got out and walked to the door. His dad opened the door and I walked to their counter and sat down. I kept my shoes on without even thinking. I put my head on the counter and kept crying. Beckett's mom got me some water. My hands were shaking when I picked up the glass. I took one sip and put it back down. I kept wiping my tears.
"Um, can you point me in the direction of the bathroom," I said standing? Mary held my hand and brought me to the bathroom.
I looked in the mirror. My face was tear-stained. My hair was a mess. I looked like a monkey, but I did not care. The people I cared most about in my life were gone. I fell to the ground and put my ear against the door. I heard muffled voices through the door.
"I feel so bad for her," Beckett's dad Parker said.
"Imagine losing your parents at such a young age," Mary said.
"It all makes me feel happy when she smiles, I can not bear to see her like this," Beckett said. It sounded like he was crying too. "I knew Sally and Greg so well, they were so nice. They never deserved this," He said again.
I stood up and I came out of the bathroom. I had done nothing there.
"Hi honey," Mary said to me. "Is their family I can call,"
The first thing that popped into my head was the reason my parents were not here right now. "I have cousins that live in Virginia," I said sniffly. My world will never be the same.
