My feet pound through the hallways and down into the prison. The hallway leading to their cell is filled with smoke. I cough, covering my mouth with my sleeve. Still, the smoke burns in the back of my throat. I try to look around, but the smoke is too thick. It makes my eyes water and itch.
I take a few steps, wandering blindly through the smoke.
"David!" I call out, coughing. "David!"
I feel a hand on my shoulder, and I whirl around. Alec stands there, holding a cloth over his mouth.
"We need to go this way," he says, pointing. His voice is muffled by the cloth. I follow him as he makes his way down to the hall. The smoke is still thick, but it seems to be clearing.
We pass a set of hooks where the protective suits used for guard duty are hung. They're black, bulky, and have a gun attached. Only one is left on the hook. Silently, I hope that it belongs to David, and that he didn't show up for guard duty.
"We should be getting close," Alec says, "But I can't be sure. There's so much smoke."
We keep moving forward, coughing. My lungs are screaming for fresh air, and my eyes are watering so badly that tears are beginning to roll down my cheeks.
"I'm going to go find some help. You keep looking. I'll be back soon," Alec turns and walks in the other direction, being careful to not trip.
I stumble around for a while, waiting for the smoke to clear. Finally, it clears enough for me to see down the hallway. I search for any sign of David. Just as I begin to think that he's not here, I find him.
My heart sinks.
He's slumped over on his side, and he's not moving.
